Did an oil (and filter) change ... decided to 'go cheap' and get some Halfords own brand oil.

£27 ... £27!!!!

I am sure the chepo stuff used to be ~£17 ...

I am not sure it is a particularly good deal at £27 ...

£27 ... £27!!

CBA to go anywhere else so bought it anyway {grumble grumble grumble} Very Happy

Anyway!

At ~£35 for an oil and filter change*, at what point does it become not economically viable to do oil changes?

i.e. how long will an engine keep running/going if you never changed the oil? (assuming oil is not consumed/kept topped up).

*admittedly it didn't use ALL the oil in one hit!!! but it did use the fatter part

£30/4 = £7.50/L
£27/5 = £5.40/L

Any further questions!?!?! Very Happy

I just put some £6 or £7 stuff in mine from Morrison's, recommended by Paddy Laughing

Only covered 20-30 miles since doing it so far, but really having no problems with it.

I've been using a 250cc scoot a lot recently.
An oil change is 1.2 litres of oil.

£12 for a 5l semi synth carlube or autocare oil works me out at £2.50 per oil change since it's got rinse out gauze filter.

Makes a change from putting 4 litres in a pan euro and an oil filter

I was surprised how much the halfords oil was as well, I'm sure it used to be less and they gave you free screwdrivers Smile

Anyway I thought I'd check in my local Yamaha dealer on the way home and I got 4L of Motorex oil for £23. I haven't really herd much about it but it seems more of a reputable brand then halfords.

£27.99 for 5L Motul Semi-Synthetic at my local dealer, including a free filter.

You were ripped off.

Nothing wrong with Halfords oil but £26.99 is a bit steep.

Changed my oil on 16th October and only paid £21.59 from Halfords(already had filter). So its gone up fair bit.

Next time look online, you can get good oil and filter details for less
than £26.99 delivered.

Also just done oil change on wifes KA, paid £26.99 for the Halfords oil but got a free £7.99 inspection torch, which I needed so not too bad.

Yes you paid for it but oil is your engines life blood and I for one wouldn't put crap oil in any of my vehicles. That said just because it is cheap doesn't always mean its not any good.

Hein Gericke do their own brand stuff very cheaply and throw in a free filter (or they did last time I bought there.)
Yes Halfords was previously quite a lot cheaper, seem to remember £19:95 for 5l at one point.
Halfords oil is made by Castrol as far as I know.

Yep, I always used to get their oil and filter deal - great value ... however, sadly the HG deal stopped well over a year ago and now it is 4L bottles!! Sad

Last time I bought HG oil, it was £23 for 4L and NO filter.

I have used HG own brand oil (and HG stocked MOTUL before that) since the dawn of time, but thought I'd go chepo Halfords this time as HG £23/4L no filter, stung last time ...

The Halfords oil still works out cheaper per L than HG, but not enough to make me want to buy Halfords oil ... it was only impatience (wanted to get the oil changed before it got dark) that stopped me simply walking out of Halfords!! Embarassed

A trade card makes it a fair bit cheaper. They don't hand them out to everyone but with a couple of fake wage slips it's easy enough to blag one.

Always get my oil from HG for the free filter Smile

Seem to remember being told that HG oil was Motul oil rebadged.

FYI but last time I was in Heine Gericke they were selling their own brand oil for £28 and the guy was going to throw in an £8.99 (lol 8.99?) oil filter for free.

Which from the one point of view is a bargain, but from the other point of view, who the f*k pays £8.99 for a £3.50 oil filer?

Not only that but their filters are an abnormal shape and difficult to remove. I had to cut mine up to get it off as it didn't fit the filter wrench without slipping, pain in the arse.
Vesrah filters on ebay can be had for about 4 or 5 quid.

Is it not cheaper to get a garage to do it?

A local garage only charged £4 for the new oil in my colleagues car.

I have old receipts in the history for my bike that show oil as hardly costing anything when it was done as part of a service.

But how much was the labour cost of the service?

Labour is between £35-50 per hour.

It takes 15mins to change the oil so if that all you want doing, you'd probably get it done all in for the price you paid for oil from Halfords, or ever so slightly more.

But you'd have about 2 litres of oil spare from Halfords still left over to use. Alternatively I suppose you could buy 3 separate litre bottles for 15-18£.
