 |
|
Currently work for a company that is stable, have progressed quite nicely from a lowly order picker up to running a department in the smaller arm of said company in just gone twelve months, and have been offered training ( NVQ'S ) in warehousing, and the way it was mentioned, onto management level...
But the place just sucks the life out of me, due to the nature of the business ( Pharmaceuticals ) it's very regimented, you can do this, you can't do that, you're being watched all the while either be it by management or cameras, you can't have a laugh for more than three seconds without someone boring eyes into you and the only time I get to see outside if if I'm taking a delivery or I'm on a very short break, everyone is also on the same wage floor level, and that's from the cleaner to the drivers, only way to earn more is to progress up the ranks as it were...
Like I say though the work is stable, unless I completely fuck something up then there is no reason not to relax slightly...
But...
I came across a job yesterday that I did when I left school, sprayer/welder/site fitter, always loved that job and regretted having to leave but at the time the gaffer wasn't prepared to pay any of us any more than we were on at the time, in the three years there none of us ever had a payrise...
Anyway, a very similar job has come up thirty seconds further up the road and worth £2.21 more an hour, so I rang earlier to quiery how firm they were on a clean driving licence ( got three naughty points ) explained it was on the bike half of my licence and whilst I may be a bit rusty on the welding I have kept my hand in over the years with spraying, the bloke was interested and I'm due round there for an interview tomorrow after work...
But as I've said I have job security where I am with further training being planned just not job satifaction, whereas this other job ( if offered ) is more interesting and more money, and due to looking at moving next year the extra cash will be helpfull and I'd be out in the van at times aswell so I wouldn't be stuck indoor all day with it doing my fruit in...
Before I found this current job I was out of work for 18 months, my full time job was looking for full time work, I applied for 203 jobs, travelled countless miles for interviews when they came up and was bored well out of my box as I hate not doing anything, and whilst this other job is looking favourable I don't want to be back in the jobless situation again if this one is offered and taken but I don't come up to scratch...
So, what say you fellow BCFers, give me your opinions...
( I know I'm overthinking this due to not even having had the interview yet, but current situations have made me think of both sides )...
Help ffs... ____________________ Previous Bikes...Honda NSR 125 RR...Kawasaki Zephyr 550...Suzuki SV 1000 S...Yamaha FZ8...Current Bike...Suzuki GSX-R 750... |

keep the job,.....just start studying aspects of it that will stimulate and train you, like plc automation,as used in hospitals,or,working out systems to double check prescription accuracy etc......
if you can progress and hide your metal monkey tendencies then its only a case of a few years when you can have your own mechanic/metal bashing shop in your garage........on top of that you could steal loads of good stuff from work for your mechanics/welding /fabrication first aid kit...
if you take the metal monkey job then make sure you have some job security................. ____________________ nearly a normal tax paying tosser.......with ferrileness suzi100,cg125,cb125scb100n,cb175,cd100,cj250t,kh250,c15,125 bantam, super 6,rickman gs750,xt500,250rs,dt175,lifan125,dolomite1850,metro,Morris220ld,morrisfg,leyland princess, range rover, corsa,vw camper .now struggling with legs. Only you can make that choice, sweetpea.
Life is what you make of it.
Why live a life where you are unhappy, when you see a way in which you *could* be happier.
If you fuck it up, you can always start again with something else.
(even if something else happens to be nothing, you can start with that too )
Works for me ____________________ Not nearly as interesting in real life. |

Whilst never having been very academic I can pick things up after being shown once, twice at a push, but there is nothing left to learn where I am as far as I can see, apart from learning how to spell all of the products we carry I can't see anything else...
The NVQ's they've put me down for I shoud piss through them as I do the practical every day and have done on and off for years, as I have always fallen back on warehousing when other jobs have gone south, I feel like I need change, I'm not one of these that can just turn up for work everyday and get on with it if it is mundane, I need stimulation and I'm not getting it...
While I was unemployed I trained as a Plasterer, but it seems so did everyone else round here as the amount of vans I see with ' Plastering ' on the side is unreal and with things the way they are, building in general is on a go slow round here as is pretty much the whole industry nationwide, so that's become less of an option...
I'm just venting tbh, until I've attended this interview tomorrow I'm over looking things, I may not get past that stage but I need to at least have a mooch incase it is a decent job/path... ____________________ Previous Bikes...Honda NSR 125 RR...Kawasaki Zephyr 550...Suzuki SV 1000 S...Yamaha FZ8...Current Bike...Suzuki GSX-R 750... |

you could pretend to be a robot employee and save up some cash or keep your mechanical interests going at weekends /evenings by earning cash servicing motors without all the hassle of premises/job security.Think about it with the current economic situation.....in the next few years there's gonna be more tranq heads and meth heads and greedy fat people collecting presciptions for ulcer treatments as well as all the extra old people...like the drug companies know...it's a winner! = expanding market
The grass is always greener on the other side,be carefull what you wish for. ____________________ nearly a normal tax paying tosser.......with ferrileness suzi100,cg125,cb125scb100n,cb175,cd100,cj250t,kh250,c15,125 bantam, super 6,rickman gs750,xt500,250rs,dt175,lifan125,dolomite1850,metro,Morris220ld,morrisfg,leyland princess, range rover, corsa,vw camper .now struggling with legs. What job to do, where do I go is a question I ask every so often, and quite often I just carry on. The bold move would be to take some risk and move on and hopefully it works out.
I did it for myself and so far, so good! The world isn't really closed up as you may think, there are always opportunities around the corner and all it takes is a little bit of balls and a tiny bit of effort ____________________ Hit the G spot. |

Best thing you can do is to remember that the interview isn't just for the employer to see if you're up to scratch, but vice versa. Have an arsenal of questions ready for the "Is there anything you want to know?" part where you can gauge the workload, regularity, how many others are on his team for instance? If there's 2 or 3 other blokes then maybe the work comes and goes, if he has a ten man team then he obviously has a need for them, things of that nature.
I've seen people drown in the misery of having an unstimulating job, I felt really bad for them, I even popped by the old factory on my day off the other month at lunch time, some 5 years after leaving and some were still there doing the same shit and feeling equally shit about it - best of luck to you mate!

Typed out a long reply and my router bombed out and it didn't post ffs...
Short version, interview went well, think he wanted to offer me the job there and then, asked if I'd go back tomorrow for a quick spray test, said no problem...
Driving home I'm just not feeling it, the job it's self is piss easy and I'd walk it, but therein lies the problem, I'd be bored shitless again in a month, so I'll phone him tomorrow, tell him I wont be there for the spray test as oppurtunities have arisen at work and I'm staying where I am but thank him for his time...
Thanks for the replies peeps, they helped me weight it up... ____________________ Previous Bikes...Honda NSR 125 RR...Kawasaki Zephyr 550...Suzuki SV 1000 S...Yamaha FZ8...Current Bike...Suzuki GSX-R 750... |

Would you be bored shitless though?
You sound bored and totally stale at your current work... spraying I'm assuming is a hard job, but things will always change, you'll get to spray many many things etc.
When I had my last job, I thought I would be bored, taking photos of cars, oooh fun! but it was great, I got to drive every type of car possible, something kept me going there.
I'd personally go for the spray test, you regret not getting back into it earlier I bet...now is your chance to try it out. Do the spray test, see how it goes, check out the actual people there. You may be happier.. you may not, lifes full of 50/50 chances, you just have to make the right one |
