police called about my bike last night....

but i was at work. came about quarter 10 at night and me mam rang me at work. they want to check over my bike. I was instantly shitting and done a hpi in which the bike came back as cat c damaged in 2008.

i bought the bike off ebay about 3-4 month ago, needed a pannel fixed, done that, mot'd, taxed, insured and got full logbook back.

now there are no notes on the logbook to say it was accident damaged, so now im thinking.... its a ringer, then again, it could be nothing.

its not down as nicked before, lad i bought it off had full logbook and keys. mam said the copper just wants to check over the chassis numbers and the parts that were noted as damaged.

slightly shiting meself here, cops are due back at 1pm today, anyone have any advice?

Let them look, if they find its stolen there's nothing you can do. The only thing you can do is hope (and maybe pray if you're that way inclined) that the bike is legit.

Not really much to say.

The log book is not proof of ownership. If it wasn't the previous keepers bike to sell then it isn't your bike now, but that will get messy.

Bikes are not subject to a VIC when putting a write off back on the road, so it shouldn't be that.

If you want to calm yourself a bit (or scare yourself) then check the engine and frame numbers carefully for any signs of tampering (the real frame number stamped in, not the one of an easily forged riveted on plate).

I'd be deeply suspicious and would want to know EXACTLY what they were up to before I told them any details or allowed them access to the bike.

The police are not coming to look at your bike to find out how squeaky clean and legal it is.

They cannot enter a private dwelling or asociated buildings to inspect a vehicle without your permission or a search warrant except under certain, very specific conditions of which idle curiosity is not one.

The police don't as a rule go around checkng write-offs have been repaired. If anyone bothered their arse doing such things, I'd have said it would be VOSA but I've equally never heard of them doing it.

My personal suspicion is that a vehicle similar to yours has been involved in a crime or accident locally and sustained damage during that and they are trawling all the local examples of said vehicle to see if the damage matches.

So I would probably let them see it but not before I found out exactly what they were up to.

Phone your Mum up & get her to give you the name of the policeman who came round then call him or phone the local station....as Kickstart says it's probably that and if you can account for your whereabouts at a certain time over the phone then they'll thank you for that!

Although, lesson learned on HPI checking before buying.

Deep breaths, you're (at most) a victim, not a criminal.

I agree that it's not likely that they're trying to recover a stolen vehicle. It's more likely that they're just ruling you and your bike out of an investigation.

Normally I'd be firing in with statutes and limits on their powers but in this specific case, taking your state of mind into account, I'd recommend that you just co-operate fully. The other alternative is to secure the bike on private land and simply make yourself non-contactable until they either get bored and give up, or get a warrant to enter your property.

But it doesn't sound like you're up for doing that, so just show them what they want to see, have the documentation to hand, answer any questions plainly and honestly.

If they say they're seizing it for whatever reason then there's not an awful lot that you can do about it on the spot without getting yourself into actual trouble.

Do get their names and numbers, a receipt from the truck monkey that collects it, and insist on being given (at a minimum) the crime number for the alleged offence that it's in connection with. Also take plenty of pictures of the bike, including of the VIN(s), then wave it goodbye.

That's worst case though: it is likely that they're just ruling you out of an investigation, and they'll give it a quick look over, see that everything is as per the docs, and go on their way.

was as it turns out, just a check. checked the chassis number and couldnt find the engine number (its a scooter) said "ahh bollocks to it" filled his form in and off he went.

I had similar sort of thing on my old 125. Bought it from a guy from ebay, about 5-6weeks after I had miss.plod at my door (she was a fittie if I'm honest, her name was Rebecca) asking to look at my bike. I asked why, she told me the guy I bought it off has been involved in some dodgy dealings, and wanted to check that I had the bike, V5, and other bits from the advert in my possesion.

I let her check it over, included the engine/frame numbers. Didn't hear back from her for a few weeks. Then got a call informing me that the guy I got it from had advertised the bike on a few different websites under different names/addresses. Took cash from each person who'd bought it, but told them he was on holiday etc and wouldn't be able to collect it till XX/XX/XX (They couldn't anyway, The bike was 180miles from where I'd picked it up from locked in my garage). I kept the bike, sorted some issues on it and then sold it.

The plod are a nice bunch of folk (from my experience, I've yet to have something stolen and then be fobbed off by them) so give them a hand if they ask for information (as long as you're not incriminating yourself though!!!) and generally don't be a cunt to them. You could need their help in the future with thefts etc.
