A colleague of similar vintage to me has been rebuilding a bike for some - err 10 years on & off (he does things like that). He believes it is now ready for an MOT but since the bike does not have any insurance he as asked if I have any ideas HOW he can get it to somewhere that will do the MOT? He lives out in the sticks so pushing it there is not an option.

One he has the MOT there is only a slim (very slim) chance that he would want to take it on the road in the next few months so he does not really want to set up a proper insurance.

Short term insurance is expensive (very)
Options I consider are
(a) to find a MOT garage that will collect the bike/ do the job and return it - for a fee of course
(b) Get a friend to ride the bike to a pre-booked MOT - if he can find one with insurance that will cover the ride

No trailer or the like is available. Anyone any other ideas?

Snod

I'd MOT it when it needs doing (i.e. when you want to ride it on the road and therefore have insurance).

Or insure it then cancel the insurance (this costs £££ in cancellation fees though).

Or use a trailer.

Or just ride it there without insurance. It can't be more than a couple of miles away.

With respect to option B, I assume your talking about a friend who has the 'and any other bike with the owners permission' caveat on their insurance. Only as I understand it there has to be existing insurance on the bike being ridden for this to be valid. I could be wrong though.

The garage might well have traders insurance and be able to ride the bike to the MOT and back under that rather than need to take it in a van..

+1. Pretty sure it has to be on some insurance (TPO minimum I believe?)

I'd probably go as much as to say try and hire a van for a few hours? Cant be that much as you'd get your deposit back, and would use next to no fuel (maybe £5 worth or so unless you drove about in it)....

One day insurance? Google will help you... Normally doesn't cost more than ~£20 when I've used it for cars.

Hi

It depends on the policy as to whether it needs another policy in force. Some specify that for the "ride other bikes" cover the apply the other bike must be covered by a policy.

However without that the bike is only insured while you are riding it. As soon as you stop riding it then it isn't insured. On the other hand legally it only needs insurance to be used on the road. Which is where life gets complicated as to what a court would class as being used on the road.

All the best

Keith
