I'm currently writing my CV up for a job, but I'm stuck!

What the hell do you put under the 'profile' part? I can only thing of making it sound like I'm signing up for a dating site!

Its nothing special, working in a call centre for car and home insurance, so want to try and word it around that.

I'm also trying to find a way to word 'sitting behind a till serving people their fuel'. At the moment I've got 'processing sales though the till'. Is there anyway of wording that better?

Thanks for any help Smile.

It was meant to go into 'Dear Auntie'...if someone could move it that would be great!

If it's not mandatory (i.e your not filling in a form) and you can't think of anything, just don't put anything.

Not sure what you mean by "profile" but I wouldn't waffle too much about yourself personally. You want them to employ you not be your best bud. Stick to appropriate stuff like your career history (list all your responsibilities etc) qualifications and the like.

Manning the counter at a petrol station can easily be stretched out to customer service; list any responsibilities you have like handling cash, cashing up, dropping tankers, do you have keyholder responsibilties etc? Do you man the place alone after hours - i.e. have the responsibility for the whole place? No need to talk it down.

I've managed to stretch the petrol station a fair bit, thinking about it I do a fair bit, cashing up, closing and opening the kiosk, training new staff with the tills and the legal side.

This is what I've got so far, if anyone could have a look and let me know of any spelling mistakes or ways to improve it, I would love you forever!

Instead of putting CV at the top I'd just put my name, and I made the same mistake of printing a few out and then realising 'license' is spelt 'licence' Rolling Eyes lol

Thumbs Up

Also I reckon another sentence or two for your personal profile.. I'd tell you mine but I'm going bed. Will do tommorow!

Whoops! Just as well I didn't put 'good speller'! Thanks.

I've added 'professional knowledge' rather than just 'knowledge', and also that I am very flexible with working hours in my profile part to pad it out a bit more.

Is it still best to keep it to 2 sides of A4? Last time I wrote a CV was 2006 at school!

Sorry Ariel but I have to disagree. I guess if you're young and need to add a bit of fluff to your CV then it's fine but for anyone with a history that space is better used expanding on your professional experiences.
I'd also add that nearly every CV I've seen that has come through an agency has had all of the 'personal' stuff stripped out, again, wasted space you could have used to put more relevant information in.

First off, any job you're serious about you should be customising the CV for that job.

Just had a look at the last CV I did (which got a reasonable return of interest and an interview, despite not having applied for much.)

I have "My Name Curriculam Vitae" at the top in bold etc - more so if it gets chucked down a desk they can easily see what it is.

Then full name and address to the left with email and phone to the right.

Then your 'personal profile' - I don't use a heading for this and have it centred.
"Experienced lead tester seeks move to contracting positions." is what I've got in this one I'm looking at, but others I would change depending on the job I was applying for.
I have ummed and ahhed about this, especially as some of them turned out pretty cliched, but over all thought it was worth have a very succinct synopsis at the start.

I then have 'Skills', although looking back I think "Key Skills" might be a better section heading; though I already have 9 bullet points which contain ever more bits of information per line - overloaded a bit, it'd be better to keep it simpler if possible (I remember taking quite a few out too.)

Then I go through job history in reverse chronological order. Each job gets a relatively less page real-estate. First is over half a page, last is five lines.
For each job I'm basically trying to give examples that backup the claims in my 'skills' section. I've done this with a block of descriptive text followed by a bullet point summary.

Then I've got a quick section split in to two, first called 'additional' which lists stuff like driving licence, first-aid and being British.
Then 'other interests' which has just 4 points in that hopefully also help substantiate the 'skills' section.

I spent ages on the darn CV, when I applied it was all done online anyway so it did'nt even get used Laughing

Couple of lines from my personal profile are things like I am very pro-active and keen to learn and develop new skills, able to use own initiative and would be a loyal and dependable employee, pride myself on time-keeping skills, willing to help out ect ect...

I tried not to use all the normal things but meh.. I'm happy with how it turned out!

Hope that helps

Thumbs Up

Thanks for all the help! I changed a few things, added a few long words in and sent it! Hopefully it will be worth it, I want to quit Tesco soon!

Hear back within 2 working days, if I've not heard by Monday evening, I guess its a dead end!

Well I didn't hear back on Monday...heard back today! Had a phone interview...bit strange as I had just come out of the gym, sweating like hell! Sat in my car with my windows steaming up. Long as no one thinks I was having a wank though!

Must have done OK as I have a interview tomorrow Very Happy

Interview done!

Think it went OK, had to do a spelling test as well! Fucking hate spelling! I'm shit at it.

Its a big step going from Tesco to car insurance sales, I've never had to meet targets before. Anyone got any experience with what its like?

Apparently the floor has a average of 20% of sales. No idea if this is high or not!

Any advice would be great Smile.

Failed! ha!

Oh well, gives me plenty of time to get my fitness up for the Army!

Thinking about it...saying I see myself in the Police or Military Police in 5 years time wasn't what they wanted to hear I don't think!

Ahh well, was a good experience !

Was it like selling insurance on the phone?

That would get very boring after a while, the good thing about driving about I find is that time goes sooo quickly!
