Anyone done any touring 2 up? I'm thinking about camping. I spent nearly 3 weeks going around Europe on my own but the rear seat carried a load of stuff.

Basically what I want to know is is it practical/possible for 2 people to camp for 4/5 days and have everything fit in a full set of Givi Luggage and a Tank bag. Or should we just fork out for a hotel?

No Chance when camping as the sleeping bags and tent plus thermoists/camping mats take up far too much space unless you have painers that allow stuff to be straped to the top of the lid or a good rack on the back of the bike.

Although it was only for the weekend i'll be using the same setup for a longer trip next year.
I must remember to give the pillion a few more breaks next time...poor sods can't move about.

Maybe I'm just too fat or ride bikes that are too small....

But my last couple of bikes (er6-f, XJ6 Diversion F) have had weight limits of 180kg.

Me in gear and helmet must be 100kg, so I guess I find a skinny chick, which will probably require rohypnol, but I digress...

Even then, luggage and stuff in said luggage would take me wayyyy over 180kg load....

Or do people not bother caring about such limits?

Although the bike manufacturer has probably dont numerous tests to determine the max loading of the bike in question; personally I dont bother with the limits.

The way I look at it is: if my bike has 60bhp and this roughly the same power as my girlfriend's car (VW Polo 1.2). And if her car can carry 5 people and luggage then there shouldnt be a problem with a bike taking 2 passengers and luggage.

I dont know what aspects the bike manufacturer looks at when they set these limits but all that it means is that these specific parts (suspension, etc) will wear out quicker than they normally would under normal use (ie, 1 rider with small luggage).

I had similar; my usual rally setup was :-

1 tank bag. My clothes, toiletries, stuff.
2 soft panniers. Inflatable double airbed, pump and cookset in one in one, sleeping bags, pillows and food in the other.
1 tent, also includes extra groundsheet and tarp.
1 backpack. Her stuff. If she wants to bring a hairdryer and teddy she can, but it goes on her back.

Sometimes the bedding went in a roll bag and my clothes and stuff went in the pannier.

[edit] Of course, her getting her own bike solved a lot of storage problems Smile

Err what? It's got nothing to do with how much power the bike makes or the suspension wearing out, but things like the strength of the subframe and the rating of the suspension. In otherwords you can break or bend parts or you'll be bottoming out the suspension on every bump. And if that's not enough to blow a seal or something check out the load rating of the tyres. Do you really want to be overloading them fully loaded 2up hacking down the motorway?
I'd take more notice of the limits if I were you.

Stay in hostels. It's just better than camping.

Been there and done that, it can be good or bad tbh, worst experience bed bugs and people getting totally wasted and shagging in front of you and or screaming arguments during the night.

Bad for my train trip across Europe about 15 years ago. Probably worse when needing to be alert for riding.

I've done rallies for years two up, never had a problem. I have a tank bag, panniers, air bed pump, sleeping bags, tent & enough T shirts & pants, socks & her skimpies to last the duration. Don't forget the spray on shower though! Laughing

I used an old Honda CB250 older than me but carried me and the girlfriend a fair bit and luggage.

Only problem I had was one very steep hill and the power loss.

But i travel light and expect/ make my girlfriend do the same take that fleece and trousers/longjohns, instead of the 4 season sleeping bag and take a smaller 2 or even one.

tent I lose space at night but don't mind too much Very Happy but take a small 2person hike tent (banshee200).

You don't need much for a 5 day trip think light and then pack lighter.

Think of it this way pannier each that includes sleeping bag and top for tent cooker (if wanted) and stuff you need quick waterproofs. roll matts can probably fit in there too or an air bed.

Tank bag your expensive luggage camera wallet phone paper work so on.

I use a waterproof holdall at 35L and a small tank bag and that does me and the girlfriend now for a long weekend with food included.

(You will probably find you have alot of room to play with)

We managed two weeks mainly camping, with oxford sports panniers, givi topbox and a tankbag with mapcase (no backpacks etc) also halfway through we left half of our stuff with friends we met up with in Nice to send back home as not needed. Be self controlled when packing Very Happy

Yup it's the £9.99 tesco tent...fits in the topbox... sleeping bags go in binliners then one each in side panniers... a flipflop each.. a shoe each.. .you get the picture....

Why else do you think I was asking Laughing

Hmm, the new misses is a GP fan so I was thinking of catching a European round this year.

I have a full set of Givi Luggage, and the TDM has more than enough Grunt to cope with it. I have a tiny Sleeping bag that would be fine, concerned about roll mats/tents. I have 2 different 2 person tents but both are too small really. Any idea on a decent compact 3 man tents?
