Charley Boorman's Extreme Frontiers

Season 1 Episode 1 of 4
New series. The adventurer travels across Canada on his motorbike, beginning at the most easterly point of Newfoundland, where he goes iceberg-hunting in the rough seas of the Atlantic. Charley also learns the skills of lobster-trawling and joins a pack of daredevil dirtbike riders on a trip through a dense and dangerous forest. But the real drama comes when he dives to a shipwreck in Lake Huron and ends up suffering a panic attack

More like Ewan's poor friend, he was running a decorating company when McGregor punted him back onto the screen.

Not the sharpest tool in the picnic, but he seems decent enough, and doing the Dakar basically gives him "no, you shut up forever" privileges. Hand

And agreed, any bike exposure is good bike exposure, even if it does just attract more mid-life-GS-crisis types.

Did I mention that I'm quite liking the look of the G650GS? Shifty

Ewan is the posh one, being the more groomed C-list celeb/movie star. Wink

I'll record it on Freeview, that way I can fast forward the horrendous amount of adverts they show on Ch5. Thumbs Up

Seemed like a nice enough guy when I spoke with him at the bike show. Not at all up himself and proper friendly. Plus point is he CAN ride a bike.

I thought it was alright, nothing special and I am not planning to set time aside to watch it next week.

I didn't quite realise how many adverts where on CH5... You seemed to get 10mins of programme then 3 mins of adverts.

I quite enjoyed it, apart from the poor editing with them saying that the lake is cold about 90 trillion times. Perhaps they were trying to make him look less like a pussy when he had his 'panic attack'.

Next weeks looks a bit better TBH. I think I'll give it a go and see what happens.

The show reminds me of the two hairy bikers cookery programme, the bike component is more to build a certain "image" of the presenter, rather than anything particularly much to do with bikes. The main two biking moments I saw, before I switched it off, were him falling off, and him not being able to keep the bike stopped Laughing

To much packed into the esp.

Need to slow down a bit and give more info on what they do with the locals.

Could be a long running show, given the title. Or a one off flop.

No, no, no.

It is not a good thing to be told "oh, like ewan and thingie on that long way thing".

Oh and Rogerborg, go for a farkled G650X, or an F800GS if you want the badge and the look but don't want to to leave the road Smile.
Don't get the point of the F650GS single (and G650GS).
Doing the Dakar would be all well and good, if he didn't moan every second of it, until he couldn't ride, when he moaned about how much he was missing the stuff he was hating Rolling Eyes.

I appreciate a load of it is no doubt done for TV, but we're not talking the sophisticated and polished being a complete twunt of clarkson. He can expect to get treated based on how he presents himself.

Saying all that, I've got my price and getting to do loads of cool stuff on cool vehicles may well be enough for the rest of the populace to think me the twunt.

Sadly my naturally unflustered demure isn't the sort that gets good ratings.

When I worked at a fancy restuarant where the hairy bikers came to visit for tv, I was expecting them to roll the bikes out of a van down the road and get a shot of them riding up the drive, but they rode all the way from the midlands.

Went to see Charlie Boorman do a talk at Canterbury Cathedral, which was quite interesting. He went into the bmw/ktm debate, seemed like quite a geniune sort of fellow.

I thought it was entertaining. Especially when he hit the cold water and panicked.

Didnt like the bit where he complained about missing his family. If I remember correct he done that constantly during the epic bike trips too.

No, Ewan did actually. He did seem like he was channeling Ewan at that point.

It's a conversation starter though, and might get a few more people at least interested enough in biking to give it a try. It's the only real road biking that I'm aware of that you can still see doing the rounds on't telly, as opposed to track and dirt racing and stunting.

The G650GS looks to have enough performance for my needs, a claimed 88mpg, and low depreciation. I'm not fussed by the badge or silly offroad aspirations, I just think it fills an otherwise empty gap in the new bike market between <25kW 250s and >53kW ER6s and Diversions, left by the demise of the 500 twins. If I were in the market for a new bike (and I'm probably not) I'd at least have a look at it before going and buying more bike than I really need.

Yes, sadly in the style of the x-factor etc, glitzy celebrity clap-trap is what people are interested; stick on some of the excellent stuff less pretentious people do and it's more interesting and should even be more dramatic - but a less 'drama prepared for popular viewing'.
Anyway; They could show that hitler predicted modern bikes and people would be interested; doesn't mean it's good for existing of future bikers! [/godwin]

There's a lot of other heavy low power options out there where you're not paying the money for the badge; also which are more suitable for road use as they have road biased wheel sizes, rather than the more dirt biased of the GS, which doesn't really make sense for road use.

Quote:

Taking the first bit, a lot better than his - for instance, when I've done hare and hounds I've actually enjoyed and completed them - while he moaned and got a feeling dropped out early. Ok, just checked up, seems he did complete, but he did it as a team - anyone know if he did the complete (then 12 hour) dawn to dusk, or just the 6 hour? Done a 6 hour one 'iron butt' myself, though not that well.
I believe I did say that given the chance, I would probably whore myself out for a chance to play in such things. With my lower back, wrist and issues, I might even be able to do a good impression of his moaning Wink.

Anyway, was feeling a tad unsettled as we seemed to be in agreement a bit too much; glad normality has been restored!

Maybe, but has trouble presenting a show without mentioning Ewan.
I'm afraid "I was in Star Wars" is significantly cooler than "I'm mates with a bloke who was in Star Wars" Wink.

New, though? And claiming 88mpg? The G650GS is listed at £5,150 new, which isn't actually a big badge premium, and when you factor in depreciation the cost of ownership could be well below a new Japanese entry level bike.

This is just me off on my "Why-oh-why-oh-why do they have to keep increasing engine size and power on entry level bikes?" rant, it should be said. The 3rd Directive 35kW A2 limit might actually see a few more bikes that match my modest aspirations. Very Happy

Minor lulz in Long Way Down was when they went to the Episode IV film set, and Ewan stood in front of a poster with himself on it, and none of the happy-snapper tourists twigged.

But yes, I think Charley's probably blagged a bunch of stuff with the "HELLO, I NEED A TICKET FOR EWAN McGREGOR's mate Charley Boorman." gambit. Probably not so much now though, he's done well for himself out of it.
