Hi All,

just built a Ubuntu 11.10 PC, and wanna start playing around with it.

Any ideas on where I can get hold of an online user guide (Ubuntu for Dummies) type thing ?

Ubuntu is the easiest of the lot in my opinion. Much of it will be point and click like in a Windows environment. There are a number of forums around the web whose names at the moment escape me. I'm pretty sure there use to be documentation on the live CD but I haven't used Ubuntu in years (I'm running openSUSE at the moment). If you need a hand with something feel free to PM me or post it in the Geek Zone as I'm sure many more people will be able to help you.

cheers james.

I'll crack on with it and see how i go.

Just installed winbind etc, and got it talking to AD

just want to query servers etc, via terminal rather than always using Windows 7 GUI on my other PC's.

Give Psychocats Tutorials a google, Ubuntu Forums is the best source of info though. Hmmm come to think of it if you can ignore the sensationalist nerdy drama that bleeds into posts, OMG! Ubuntu blog is another good one.

Get used to using the terminal for moving files about, renaming things, installing stuff, running scripts etc
File permissions and super user related stuff is also very useful to know.

Ubuntu is practically the same as windows. The only difference is a lot of programs will be installed using the terminal.

Just get used to using it for a bit and when you get stuck doing something look for a guide.

sudo apt-cache search <program like name>
sudo apt-get install <program>

Are probably the two most useful things to be able to do.

Personally i hate the unity interface and run the classic gnome one. I also have the window controls moved to the right. It's a lot more like windows, but it's what i've been using since forever

I am a Technical Support Analyst in London, using mostly Microsoft apps/servers, along with MAC's

However I wanna learn something new, so am playing around with Ubuntu. Just finished a Win7 / Landesk deployment project so now want to tax the ol'e grey matter on something new.

yes, agreed unity is crap.. prefer the classic Gnome, although I'm looking at KDE at the moment. just installing it.

Has a ttf-corefonts problem but managed to fix it with sudo apt-get -f install Surprised

I use KDE in openSUSE and so far it's my favourite environment. I ran Fedora for quite some time but didn't really get on with it and went back to openSUSE. The desire to learn more pushed me to look at Ubuntu as it was touted as easy to pick up and it really is. If you have enough hard disk space and a computer that's half decent you could download vmWare (VMWare?) and have a play about with loads of different distros until you find the right one for you.

I love Unity and use terminal maybe once every 2 months tops. I install with Debs almost. The only thing I dont have a deb for is Second Life which makes its own shortcut so its not really needed. *shrugs*

I dont get the fascination with terminal from a lot of Linux users for home use PCs.

I've got a windows 7 64 bit PC with VM Ware installed for my IE testing environments.

I now have the Ubuntu PC and all linked with Synergy (one mouse and keyboard). Lovely jubbly Cool

It's open source software that's made by those people who like to mess around with the guts of the system. It encourages people to do so, and other times it's essential to do so in order to make things work. Currently i can't watch HD video as it plays it at about 2 frames per second if i'm lucky. So i have to mess with restricted config files, download code, patch drivers, build the drivers and install them and stuff. The same goes for my wifi too!
