I have located a cheap 650 engine for my poorly bros...partially due to the poorlyness and partially because I just fancy a bros 650.

Has anyone swapped their engine for a higher capacity one?

Did you declare it to the DVLA and how much did insurance sting you?

Is it worth just getting a bros 650 frame and v5?

Thanks

It would be cheaper to sell the parts and buy a 650 Bros than it would to insure a 400 with a 650 engine. Insurance companies don't like that stuff.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

My CJ250 had a CB360 engine in it
DVLA got informed of the engine change- as the V5 I had was incorrect

I corrected the V5 (engine cc and number change and colour change) and sent it to them

They sent me a new V5....but for some reason they didn't update anything ...new colour cc or engine number (muppets)

My insurers got told it was a 360cc engine and that it was now green....they were not at all "interested"...but at least took note as the certificate doc stated 360cc

This was a bike "added" to my policy as I already had a bike insured with them.....the "extra cost" IIRC was £25 for admin charges

Regards
Rob

What insurer would this be? Sounds reasonable.

I would guess that some insurers are more lenient about things like aftermarket exhausts and engine swaps than others. I've heard Carole Nash are pretty good, but not all that cheap overall. Been with express insurance this year and they didn't seem to be bothered by my Micron exhaust on the ZZR...so maybe they'll be the same for engines.

Noted, but I hear of so many people doing mods and upgrades to their bikes. It seems commonplace with the Bros to stick in an Africa Twin/Transalp lump in.

Motorcycle Direct

Been with them since I started and have been very cheap for me for the last few years - clearly beating any others (price wise) I have tried to get quotes with

Not yet had to claim- which I guess is the only time you find out if it was really value for money

I guess it helps that I'm over 40 cost wise, despite being a newbie on 2 wheels...IIRC it was sub £300 for both bikes last renewal...thats fully comp, with extra cover (breakdown and legal)

When I wanted to add the CJ360 I /think/ I had to pay /just/ an admin fee (£25) - I dont recall having to take out another policy but I can check on that
When I wanted to change the CG125 to the GPZ500 they charged £35...and then when I changed the CJ360 to the DR250 again it was just £35 admin fee

I only ever had 2 bikes insured with them at any one time, but they got shuffled as things changed, each time docs got emailed to me within seconds so I could print off and get tax and only requiring an admin fee each time

When I first got the CG125 (my first bike) I bought it, filled in the V5, stuck my L plates on - then phoned them to get cover starting immediately (was a Saturday afternoon) ....completely drama free - ONCE I got through- have to admit I was a panicky as it seemed no one was picking up the phone and had visions of not being able to get home legally

Never had to use the breakdown service either....yet

Regards
Rob

The problem I will have is that I'm 21 with a currently pending accident to my name. That will be resolved in court on the 20th, but will most likely come out with me at least partially at fault. I'll ring around the insurers and see what they can do. Might help that I'm insuring 3 bikes...if I can afford to.
