Hello there BCFers. I'm in serious need of some mature and down to earth advice. I'm looking at a bike on ebay, and I'm not sure whether or not to go for it. "It's a £1600 bike, I can't let it go for less than £1000" This pretty much worries me a little, or is he just talking the talk?

I'd like anyone who knows their stuff about 125's to give me their opinion as to if it was them they would part with £1000 for it. I have earned all this money from my part time job, so I really need to know from people that know what they're on about. I'm a little worried about the headlight insurance stuff as well...

Many thanks, Tom - https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170737936710&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:GB:1123#ht_1003wt_1396

There's a great new forum for 125 riders being spammed advertised on BCF as we speak.

It would probably be a great place to look if it had a) any members or b) any posts.

Right here we go - recorded as an insurance write off... what do I do with it in this case? Just leave it the fuck alone?

HPI history does mean it'll be worth a bit less in the future.
Presumably the person selling knew it had been written off as he says it came from an insurance company.
No need to runaway, but look over the bike properly and consider reseale value.

Hmm. 6 years old, only 1900 miles, but 3 owners. It's a commuter bike that's not been used for commuting. I'd expect the battery to be shagged, and have a good look at the tyres, fork seals and chain to see if anything has perished or stiffened. It's also likely had the oil it shipped with sitting in it for 6 years, and check inside the tank for rust.

What kind of owner lets their bike be written off for a broken headlight (£20 - £30 to replace, not £700)? One who wants rid of it, I'd have thought. Or there's more to the story.

So, it could be completely honest, it probably is, and £1000 isn't unreasonable for such a low mileage. But it's not exactly a steal either (no 125 is), it's too expensive to just walk away from if it's a shed. I'd have a good look at it - and its MOT history - to try and spot a turd floating in the carb punchbowl.

tl;dr version - approach with caution, don't believe one word that you're told about it that you can't verify with your own eyes, and treat any promise of a warranty as a joke.

Or a 125 rider who had the bike bought by daddy and is just going with the flow.

okay guys, thank you very much for your assistance! I have decided to "run a mile" because I don't have the required experience or knowledge to work out whether its a good bike or a turd in disguise.

I'm going to stick with bikes that seem to have less possible issues. Thanks again guys!

You'll have to ask much the same questions about any used bike, particularly in the sub-£1000 sector. A bike that looks too good to be true probably is. You just need to think about what specifically to expect and check for.

There's nothing particularly suspicious or hard to check about this one, and it's barely run in - but verify against the MOT history. On the write off issue, it largely depends on what category the write off was.

Low mileage is a better bet than assurances that a high miler has been well looked after, and it will increase value to compensate for the write-off history (which not every future buyer will bother to check). If you can stretch to £1000, it might be a decent bike, although it's really going to come down to what you can sell it for later.
