I'm currently in the midst of renovating my '87 GPZ 500 S and one of the things i'm planning on doing is servicing the brakes. Now my dad very kindly got me some DOT4 brake fluid whilst down in halfords (30mins) away and it's hard to get there, but on the reservoir cap on the front brake, it says it can only take DOT3. Now to my knowledge i've not seen any DOT3 fluid about before, so would DOT4 fluid be ok in this case?

Cheers

I thought DOT 3 and 4 were not compatible due to their boiling points being different?

You have to completely replace it but it will be fine.

There's always one to go and make me worry again, because otherwise i'd just have bought a bottle of brake fluid only to go and help strip paint off peoples cars that I don't like! Razz I've had quite a few people now wind me up saying that DOT4 would not work in a DOT3 system Sad Laughing

The general rule is you can go up a grade but not down.

Also DOT 5.1 (which I hadn't heard of) is apparently compatible with DOT4, but DOT5 is NOT compatible with DOT4.

Dot 3, 4 and 5.1 are all compatible. Just flush the system and fill with dot 4 Smile
