Just wondered what was the most embarrassing and/or unnecessary accessory you've seen, or fitted, on a bike?

This was inspired by two recent sightings, both on Goldwings (not the same one)
Arrow Cup holder Confused - why?
Arrow Stabilising wheels - like an undercarriage, came down both sides of the rear wheel - looked like kiddies training wheels! Confused

Any others out there? Very Happy

To hold your cup? Smile

Most spangly anodised crap strikes me as completely pointless.

Hmmm, must be that CB500S I saw a few years ago, with everything anodised pink.

And I mean everything was pink, pink wheels, pink footrests, pink barends, pink screen, pink bolts etc, you get the idea! Laughing

Most, if not all, aftermarket accessories are unneccessary, carbon, polished, metal, anodised etc - anything other than what comes on the bike as standard is almost certainly not "neccessary"

In fact even race cans, suspension and so on are not actually neccessary.

Doesn't stop people buying them though Smile

There's a difference between unnecessary and pointless though.

Though I'm sure you can argue that the point of the anodised crap is to look nice, it's a subjective thing.

Race can has a point - sounds nice, sometimes gives more power.
Double bubble has a point - keeps the wind off.
Crash mushrooms have a point - duh.
Suspension has a point (if you're good enough for it to matter).

To me, there will never be a point in replacing the silver bolts that hold your fuel cap in with blue ones. Smile

You could say then, theres no point really in painting your track bodywork when it's fine as it is.. painting it will only make it look better Wink Laughing

I'm not a big fan of anodised stuff, the only things anodised on my bike are the valve caps - that's about as far as I'd like to go, with steering dampers then they are usualy anodised gold or silver though etc... I can see how that makes them pointless, but the same would still go for anything carbon or anything replaced "for the sake of it"...

I don't like motrax bolt ons, but some bolt on stuff can look really good, finishing touches etc, harris carbon etc is nice even if it doesn't hold a purpose.

If we wanted bikes that just had a point then we wouldn't have paint schemes, everything would be matt black, but that's not a worry because it's got a point to it Smile

Uh, Yams, every time I mention stick on anodised shit I'm not necessarily referring to you.

As I said, it's all subjective.

Each to their own, obviously someone somewhere NEEDS a cupholder on their goldwing....

Personally I love shiny, spangly bits and would like as many of them as possible on my bike (although I draw the line at tassles!) but that's just my taste. I also love to see sleek, stripped-down streetfighters with barely room for a rider let alone an extraneous anodised bolt.

That's what I like about the whole custom-bike scene. You can make your bike totally individual to you, even if you do it by bolting on every nightmarish piece of chrome you can buy from the Custom Chrome catalogue til the damn thing is a traffic hazerd in daylight cos of the potential flashback.

Being the partner of someone who has just fitted a towbar to his VT500 (made out of an old car roofrack) to tow a home-made trailer (made out of a road sign) doesn't really help with my taste in accessories!

I'm showing my age again here aren't I? Embarassed

I know your not refering to me as you know I don't have anodised stuff Whistle

I'm speaking in general terms but mentioned that in theory paint jobs are pointless so mentioned the track bodywork. You know I don't seriously think that you should keep it primered, just a paint job is pointless according to the inital post.

Did you see him/her get off their bike? alot of disabled/handicaped people use them, so that they can carry on biking. They usually pop down at low speeds then pop back up say over 5 mph.

There was some pictures I found on bike pics (lost the link though) of someone who made a mountain bike carrier for his bike! It fixed across the rear seat I think and could carry two mountain bikes on it!

Yes, spoke to the guy as we sort of went differnet routes to the same place so kept leap frogging each other. He handled the big wing well filtering through traffic Confused. He was not disabled/handicapped. Said it helped if stopped on hills, otherwise it just saved trying to put it on a centre stand Shocked

All I'm saying is it looked silly and out of place on a bike Wink

Once saw a picture of a courier on a GT550 with a washing mashine on the back Very Happy Guess that doesn't count as a bike accessory though Razz Laughing

That strikes me as a feature for a partially disabled rider?

Totally agree Thumbs Up Friggin idiotic looking stick on shite.
The most useless bolt on that I can think of was the sidewinder sidecars, if anyone's ever ridden a bike with one on you'll know what I mean. There was no excuse for them, people put them on to get round the licence laws regarding L plates & big CC bikes. They should've spent the money on lessons instead Laughing Brick Wall

The guy I was riding with in California had his bike with a bike carrier on the back. Sounds like a good idea to me 'cept I can't be arsed cycling!
