Has it always been that way or is it because I am getting old? https://www.liquidninjas.com/bbs/images/smilies/klan/oud.gif

Was filtering earlier and thought ... I am seriously pushing my luck here!

Didn't make me re-consider enough to pull into line with all the cages mind!! Very Happy

of course its dodgy.

filtering is one of the most dangerous things we bikers do. so many variables we cant take into consideration. doors opening, cars changing lanes/u-turning without indication, etc..

at night its even worse as from their pov in their mirrors all they see are some lights behind them. not easy to distinguish whether its a bike, another car etc..

plus its harder for you as you cant see the drivers to guess where they're looking, see tyres turning etc..

still do it? of course you do but more dodgy.. of course it is

Filtering in the dark and rain is dodgy, bright clothing wont help because A - people don't look so it doesn't matter what colour/how reflective you are and B - half the problem is that we struggle to see through the glare and rain drops, coloured clothing won't help this.

A clean visor, clean mirrors and an anti rain treatment on your visor helps a lot.

Yeah I hate the way brake lights from cars on both sides refract through beads of water on my visor and make it hard to see anything.

Filtering is dodgy, but we still do it on a daily basis because that’s a major advantage of commuting on the bike. With light traffic it takes me about 40 minutes to get to or from work. If its total gridlock it only takes 10 or 15 minutes longer.

Modern tyres give me a lot more wet filtering confidence. I remember barely saving loads of front wheel lock-ups 10 or 15 years ago, but wet grip has come on leaps and bounds recently. However it’s still one reason why I’m considering changing my commuting machine to something with ABS.

At this time of year I wear a hi-viz jacket or long sleeved vest with lots of reflective stripes, but I doubt that it helps at all for night filtering. More useful to have a really loud exhaust. Even during daylight when a clean hi-viz garment shines like a supernova it only helps if the other road users can actually be bothered to look around them. Driver distraction is getting worse. I haven’t had many people perform careless lane changes in front of me recently, but cars drifting all over the road in slow moving traffic because the driver is concentrating on some other “vital” task is becoming endemic.

The good old mobile user is a given, but some take it to extremes. I was filtering through motorway traffic that was probably moving at 20-30mph and approached a car that was weaving quite significantly from one side of the lane to the other. As I passed I saw the front seat passenger holding up a mobile, presumably on loudspeaker while the driver had a pile of papers pressed up against the steering wheel and was busy annotating the document with a highlighter. Compromised vision and steering FTL! Would almost love the airbag to go off just so he had to explain to all his friends how he got a Stabilo Boss embedded 3 inches up his left nostril. Laughing

Summer: light 'till 11o'clock, nice weather, good visibility, windows wound down
Winter: dark at four, crap visibility, glaring lights in mirror, noise of wet road, windows wound up, heater blasting

Nope - can't think why it might be any more risky....

Yep Smile.

(Roadcrafter one piece - very nice suite for commuting, but unfortunately couldn't use on my sports bike.)

But also, extra lights:

Note also had extra tail lights on top box.
Plan for the GSXR had I kept commuting another winter on it was to get aftermarket fairings and stick a load of 'neon string' over it to make it more visible without offering a point light source, which tends to be blind.

Note on both bikes I've got a load of reflective tape stuck over it, different angles, on the wheels etc too.
Definitely had more people noticing me with the strips on the muffs.

Not on a bike:
