Sublime, ridiculous, visionary, crushing. A film predicated on a typo before most of us knew what a typo was:

https://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTta4Dq0rfO66ltA-GCvECx1AhQChrESz2f_7LmQKxheXF0555f

It's a Must See, and possibly even more relevant now than when it was made (1984). 27B-6 forms all round.

That gets a "very high" rating in my films to see before you die.
And when you think about what Mr Gilliam is trying to put across in a not so subtle way, it` still relevant and still quite disturbing!

Well done Terry !

I would have said it is definately one to watch, but to watch only once. I've owned it for years, but it took me a long long time to finally get around to it, because I know precisely how it would make me feel.

It is bleak and soul crushingly depressing.

I saw it mentioned on a breakfast programme one day last week, but couldn't tell what they were talking about because there was no sound on at the time, anyone know what that was about? Some anniversary of it?

The film Repo men blatantly rips it off at the end. It is a good film, but a bit hard to watch in places, when it comes to gilliams work i think i prefer 12 monkeys. Speaking of him, fear & loathing is on right now

I downloaded it some time ago... I keep uhming and arring about watching it... If it's /that/ depressing, I probably should avoid it today.

Might stop watching 'On any Sunday' and watch that instead... Thinking

OAS is good, but soooooooo twee.

Watched this on Saturday - I was laughing my ass off in places, I thought the dark comedy was massively Brianesque! How the hell have I missed this film for so long!!

In all, it's a lot like the book 1984, but without Big Brother. Just a bumbling mess of buffoonery and nobody really in charge.

In all - a MUST watch. If you like V for Vendetta, most of Muse's work, Blade Runner, Batman (not the camp 60s nonsense...) and so on, you'll probably appreciate it. Thumbs Up

You'd struggle to find a man who likes dystopic/eutopic stuff as much as me, but this is just arse. Total arse. Overly indulgent, overly symbolic... arse.

*sigh*

Ah well, at least I'm drunk now. They can't take that from me. Unlike my last two and a half hours.

Repo-men genuinely did it better.

I should point out, sir, that I'm only 24... therefore have an attention span of 0.0004 s and have to have pretty special effects if they're going to try...

This, failed.

Too long, too ugly. Although I did like the desk fight half way through. That, sadly, was about it.

I was pleasantly surprised how real the city and buildings looked. I know it's cheap, but I looked on Wikipeadofile after watching and I agree with the bit in there talking about how the city inspired Gotham in the Tim Burton Batman stuff.

I liked how vast and faceless everything looked. And how the ducts were EVERYWHERE! That's not special effects, granted, but man, that's a few quids worth of plastic!

The dream sequences were a bit ghey, and they didn't add a lot to the overall effect of the film in my opinion.

The plastic surgery stuff was good too...

In all, I reckon it looked quite advanced for an 80's film. I watched a few minutes of RoboCop the other day when it was on, and laughed at how utterly appalling the effects on that were. And that's from 1987...

'Good for X year' does not equal 'good'.

Ack, just seemed like there was a lot of pointless bilge in the bastard. 150 minutes kiddies... 150 minutes...

I nearly shat an eyeball during the thing.

It would seem we wouldn't, going by your latter comment! Wink

It's not meant to be an overly serious film; with a decent number of monty python people involved for a start I believe!

As for the 'look' of the film, I think it stands up pretty well; "it's stylised, fool", as someone once said to me about Gattaca many years ago.

I was impressed by the cast.
I found certain bits of it funny.
I found a few bits of it interesting/thought provoking.

But for the most part, it was just boring. Stylised dystopia is MOST dystopia films. Children of Men is gritty dystopia, Equilibrium is stylised as hell. Those are both fantastic films.

Ack, I'm bitter. I gave it a go, but not a fan at all.

And you liked equilibrium, oh dear!

Now, on it's own, I would consider it a pretty good film.
And I appreciate "there's nothing new under the sun"; but equilibrium seemed to suffer particularly badly from having plagiarised so much and having so little originality.

And for me that complete lack of originality from big works spoils it - I can understand it more when the stuff copied is cult or generally unknown, but in this case it's all taken from famous media.
For a generic action film; fair enough.
