Hi

Very unlikely, but still avoid breathing in the brake dust.

All the best

That is what I thought, but can't find anything confirming that for the UK. Was outlawed in the USA but the ban was overturned.

All the best

There's different types of asbestos, too, isn't there? White & blue is it?

OP, they are brake pads, a service part. Highly unlikely they contain asbestos, or a dangerouse form of. Either way, they are designed to be user replaced, or service replaced, and even in a profesional, H&S obscessed franchise dealers, I'm pretty sure that they dont have to take the bikes into fume chambers, or suit up in bio-chem suits with three way breathig masks to swap brake pads!

Just be diligent about hygene, dont try tasting the pads, or anyuthing daft, or blowing brake dust out of the caliper... yeah, that 'suck' before you blow will be where you breath in all the shit! Use soapy water and a tooth-brush, to clean the caliper; not an air-line (if you have one) blowing the dust into the air you are breathing! Wash your hands after.

Basic common sense and hygene, is all the precaution you should need.

Just to echo the above. Probably not, but asbestos or no, brake dust is not something you'd want to be inhaling anyway.

I've bought NOS brake shoes quite recently that definately did contain asbestos. Said so on the packaging.

It's not all doomsday though, most schools in the UK have asbestos in the ceiling tiles. It's only really dangerous if you disturb then inhale the dust.

But the chances of a scooter made in 2003 using brakes parts made in the 80's is pretty much nil.

Dunno. Small hondas share parts across a lot of models. Be interesting to see how many models and over how many years a standard brake shoe such as that fitted to a CG125 fits.

As far as HSE are concerned workers exposed to DUST should be protected.
There is a bit more to it than that but briefly:
Protected by:

Reduce or completely eliminate the hazard.
Provide correct PPE for the hazard.

In other words, any substance as a powder or dust is considered a hazard.

As said, good hygiene and do not breath the dust.

Brake cleaner wets the dust so prevents it getting airborne.
As to asbestos, the colour of the asbestos means nothing really as all asbestos is considered a health hazard.

People accept asbestos as a hazard but few consider the other compounds associated with vehicle maintenance.
Used engine oil, brake fluid, anti freeze etc. are all very harmful compounds too. We probably come into contact with these more than asbestos.
It is not Poofy (Puffy for those in the N. East) to wear rubber gloves. They cost peanuts if you buy a box for a fiver.
