serious question, I am thinking about buying oil in bulk, its much cheaper if you buy a 45 gallon (200 litre) drum, but its still a big hit in one go. If it was split several ways it would be affordable.

Also, if you use straight mineral oil at the mo, would you use synthetic if it was cheaper?

I use and have always used Putoline Semi Synthetic, its cheaper than the fully synth and better than normal mineral oil IMO.

Hi

It varies with me. At the moment using a Silkolene semi synthetic bike oil, but have also used mineral, semi synthetic and fully synthetic car oil. Depends on the bike really.

I tend to buy it from the local oil distributer (used to be a BP dealer, now moved to Texaco but gets Silkolene with no problems). Bit cheaper that way.

The savings for a ~200 litre drum are nominal compared to just buying boxes of 4 litre cans, or 25 litre drums of car oil. Also it is just about impossible to move a ~200 litre drum.

All the best

Keith

At the moment I just use semi-synthetic Silkolene 10w-40 on account of the damned thing burning off half a quart every 1,000 miles or so. Full synthetic would probably get to be almost expensive as gas.

Is that normal?

I wouldn't consider that totally excessive, although it is getting near the top end of what I would tolerate. It is nothing compared to what some of the Z series kawasakis use. Jap bikes can be wierd like that, if it is down on compression then it may be more cause for concern. Mind you, even if the bore is excessivley worn, if you keep it topped up you are unlikley to run into problems (except perhaps californian emissions regulations, I believe they are quite strict?)

I use Castrol GTX and have done for a long time. I sometimes use Motoul semi synthetic when Hein Gericke are doing their "buy the oil and get an air and oil filter free" offer.

Do you have a custom exhaust system? If you reduce your exhaust back-pressure with a high-free flow system, you'll tend to burn more oil -- it comes from your exhaust valve guides especially from over-head valves. Factory exhaust back-pressure helps keep the oil up in the valve guides, but with reduced back-pressure, it comes right down into the exhaust chamber and burns right up.

Also, your exhaust valve stem seals/umbrella's might be failing which lets too much oil get on your exhaust valve stems and down into the valve stem guides where it starts to burn close to the exhaust chamber.

Low-compression doesn't actually cause you to burn oil. In fact, the more blow-by you get due to low compression only causes additional oil starvation on your cylinder walls increasing the rate of ware. The blow-by actually removes oil deposits -- that's why once you start getting low compression, it starts getting worse quickly.

I would look closely at your exhaust valves, the exhaust valve seals, and the exhaust valve guides /sleeve for wear..

I use poncey oil for the r6 (Castrol r4), semi tarty for the zx9, whatever's around the garage for the dr and a 2 stroke gear box oil for the rs seeing that it uses bugger all anyway.
