Or have your key on a keyring that you always put in the same pocket. Haven't lost a key in over 30 years.

I'm going to lose my keys today, aren't I?

Although I agree never carried a spare key, there are other simple ways of starting a bike if you know how even been taught one before, not saying on forum as you don't want to inform thieves.

Also heard of a company before not sure not sure who offhand can't remember the name. Basically they had a small compartment in the sole of motorcycle boots where you could store a spare key.

Now ya wouldn't loose that key.

You've just tempted fate so I would keep a good eye on that key wherever you go Laughing

I have my main key on a fob with the alarm switcher offer. That gets attached to my mail keyring as soon as I get off the bike. On the main keyring that stays zipped in my pocket is my spare key.

Thinking of getting another one cut and leaving that in the house but have not gotten around to it yet.

So to help someone out there avoid a similar bummer, the moral of this long boring story is always carry a spare key because without a key youre bike is going nowhere and you might be a lot further than 30 miles from home.

Unless both keys are in your jacket which gets nicked so you have zero keys left and zero keys left at home to get copied.

Of course if that happens then sod's law dictates you are also the proud owner of a bike with a built in ECU immobiliser and coded keys so you will need a new lockset, new keys and a new ECU at a cost of somewhere around £500+.

Always keep at least one key in a safe place (i.e. not on your person).

It helps if you loose it at home, or a friend wants to borrow your bike Wink

Main Bike key is always separate.

Spare bike key is attached to my keyring that has all my other keys on it.

Definately if riding abroad (or v long way from home). Swap spare keys with a mate who is with you (presuming you are not touring alone).

Place spare key in latex glove. Spray WD40 into glove. Fold glove up. Duck tape glove somewhere on the motorcycle in a nook & cranny.

Thats what I've heard.

If someone happens to find mine then fair play to them. Thumbs Up

Have heard tales of insurance not paying out if you aren't able to send them both keys after a vehicle was stolen.
Because they think you left it insecure with a key in.

Hmmm, I have not heard of this, certainly not with the companies I work for.

Have more than 2? <shrugs>

I have heard of the insurance two keys thing but Ive owned bikes with only one key in the past, so by that rationale a bike without 2 keys is uninsurable! Also despite the million and one probing questions the vampires ask Ive never actually bee confronted with the question of 'how many keys do you have'.

Ive actually been the victim of key vanishing on a previous occasion. I lost my CBR6 key, somehow. Ended up needing 2 new keys and a new ECU. If it hadnt been for the fact I had made a copy of the original key (not knowing about the HISS) I would have needed a new barrel, new seat lock and new tank.

If you only have the one key but have an immobiliser from the factory (such as HISS where theres a coded chip in the key for a transponder to pick up) I would suggest getting another key if possible just in case, or failing that get a copy cut and it will save you needing new locks at least Wink

Carrying a spare key with me? Not likely!
