Is it worth buying wrecked bikes and breaking them for spares?

I know some bikes can be worth more in parts but where would you buy the bikes from in the first place? Anyone had any experience with this sort of thing?

Vehicles are usually always worth more in parts, that's why scrap yard owners are so rich.

The problem with breaking vehicles is that it's a very slow income. If you want to do this sort of thing, I would suggest looking for bikes where parts are less popular. That way, you can charge a decent amount of money for the parts, and you're more likely to make an extra profit, but it's still a very slow income.

Where should I be looking to buy them in the first place?

I already have an idea on which sort of bikes I'm looking for, ebay seems a little expensive and there's not much there

Free-adds, classified under spares and repairs or just search hard on the net or walk round the streets and see if there are any bikes undercover collecting moss and offer money to take it off there hands.

The people who know the best places and methods to buy aren't going to tell you as it cuts into their profit and everyone would be doing it.

Hi

Be aware that if you start doing this on any reasonable scale you will probably get the attention of the council who will ask all sorts of questions about safe disposal of oil, etc.

Not sure about bikes, but for breaking cars there are a hell of a lot of regulational hoops to jump through to be registered.

All the best

Keith

Looked into this. The ONLY way to make any money is to be in the pocket of the insurance companies and get their right-offs. They, of course, will only deal with registered breakers but I am sure there is also some under the counter dealing done with the assessors.
You stand to make more by repairing plastics, crunched stuff is peanuts but it does take time and care to make good.
Then you enter into the minefield of spares / repairs. To make ANY money at this you have to be absolutely geared for a complete strip of the chassis and hope to hell the engine is sound. IF you can buy for less than £400 and spend about £200 making it look good, MOT and tax it, you stand a chance in the sub £1000 market of making a couple of hundred + on each one. This is ONLY viable if you cost your time at £zero. If you are really good you can turn one out a month... not much chance of being a millionaire then.
Dont forget the overheads of a van, tools, heating and lighting a garage and make sure you have a mate to call on for the heavy lifting.
You can augment your earnings by doing service and repairs as the word gets around and you might find that aspect becomes the cash earner, its certainly the only way I can justify my little operation.
