Okay so I have been riding around on my Sanya 125 since June and I want a better bike. Now I dont know wether to get another 125 or o my tests for a bigger bike. The 125 I would get would be a Honda CBF but the bigger bikes I have been looking at are the Suzuki Bandit 650.

I mean the bikes cost about the same price but how much does it cost to do my bike tests I'm on a CBT at the moment. Also once you have passed your bike test can you get any size bike I mean can I jump from a 125 straight to a 650 ?

You may as well wait until you do your tests and then buy the Bandit. They're good bikes. If you're under 21 and you do your A2(?) Test, you can ride anything up to 33bhp for a 2 year restriction period, unless you do your AA test afterwards.

If you're over 21, you can do your DAS and then you can ride anything you like (I believe? Don't quote me on that), but this costs around the £600 mark.

Hope this helps.

First of all: https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=33113

Secondly, yes you should do your test. It shouldn't cost more than about £500 for training, bike hire and test fees (£100).

You can do direct access if you are over the age of 21 which means doing your test on a 500 but you can then ride anything.

Otherwise, you are doing your 125 test which means you're restricted to 33bhp bikes for 2 years. So something like my Bros, or something else with a restrictor kit (you could do this to a Bandit).

Then it's just a case of working out how much cash you've got left for the bike and insurance (I assume you've already got decent gear). Then with that budget, think about what you want out of a bike; mile munching, weekend blasts, commuting etc

Well I'm 20 now but 21 in March this might be a dumb question but what is restricting and how would I restrict a bandit ? Laughing

Having just been through it (with years of CBT experience) be prepared for it to cost nearer £750/£800 these days to do the DAS if you go the full training route.

It'll restrict the Bandit 650 down to less than 33bhp, so it won't be as powerful, but it'll be legal for you to ride on the road in your restriction period. Not too sure how it works myself, but just had a quick look on Google, and looks like you have to replace the ECU as well. Someone else will be able to elaborate more on that. Laughing

DAS can be very expensive if you fail. March next, you are right into the 'crush' of people trying to get test apointments ahead of licence changes due January 13. You are effected, in if you dont pass this year, DAS age is going up to 24, and you wont be able to test for more than a 125 on a 125, and the current two year restricted licence will become a permenantly restricted 'middle-weight' licence, so you would have to test twice to get full unrestricted, and do it DAS style on a big bike.

Personally; get your tests while you can on a 125.

I wouldn't choose a bandit to restrict. Its not difficult you stick some big washers down the carbiurettor mounts to restrict air-flow hence power through a smaller inlet orafice. You are advised to Dyno after to ensure that restriction does come out under limit, & have ready proof, if ever asked for.

I'd choose a twin, as a 33bhp restric bike; need half the number of restrictor plates fitting, and usually easier to get and and do. While twins usually less powerful to begin with need less restriction, and can be a bit more spirtited, having been less restricted, and cheaper on spares, nut wearing out bits designed for so much more power than you are using.

If your Sanya isn't on DSA approved list for 'Standard Bike' test....

Probably cheaper & easier to hire a school bike (£65 ish per session) to do tests on, than take 'hit' buying, insuring and then selling something JUST to test on. But £135 hires you a DAs bike with instruictor to do same.

Thing is, if you dont get a licence, 125 route for 2 year restricted, or DAS route for unrestricted licence, in next 12 months, you will have three years to wait until you can do DAS again..... you would only get a 125 only licence testing on a 125 till then, and you'd have to test DAS style on a 500 to get a permenantly restricted A2, and have to hold that two years or turn 24, before you can test again to get unrestricted licence......

your call, but I'd be putting getting the licence ahead of bike actual choices.

Oops, the Sanya SY125 11C is listed as an A1 bike. I'm sure it is capable of 100kph, but most domestic Chinese bikes claim 90kph because (I've been led to believe) that's the limit on the roads that they're allowed on in China.

You might get away with it though, I wasn't even asked about my de-badged Chinese bike when I sat A2.

Definitely get a shake on, you don't want to miss out on the chance to get an A license the easy way.

Hi Paddy Im on the wirral (Merseyside) tbh I think I might just get a bigger 125 like a honda xl varadero and just pass the module were I can take the L plates off. The honda looks like a really decent bike any reviews on it ?

If you want something to just pass the mods, definitely grab a CG or a CLR125 (cannot recommend the CLR enough!!)

It handles fantastically and is quite light, perfect for all the actual slow speed stuff! I've owned 2 now and both have handled great for a 125.

Reason to get them over the Vara is the price, just getting through your tests, I'd grab the cheapest A2 capable 125.

Good luck mate Thumbs Up

(btw im from Kent, bit too far Sad but I have got a 125 here (same size as the Varadero) for sale, will take £400 for it and you can arrange delivery on shiply.com for under £100 im sure.) https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=231759&highlight=hyosung

That would be ALL of them: CBT, Theory/Hazard, Practical Module 1 'off-road', Practical module 2 'on-road'.

And that gives you 'Full' licence entitlement, not 'big-bike' entitlement; allows you to ride any size bike you like (restricted for first 2 years to 33bhp), which, hard to believe includes bikes 125 and smaller!

They dont take that bit away, nor do they take away the rest of the entitlement if you dont go straight out and buy something over 250cc!

But its the only way to legally not have to display the L-plates!

Unless you intend using the Sanya to do ALL the exact same tests, for the exact same prices..... which would gain you an A2 group licence restricting you to 14.5bhp 125's forever....

Bit of a waste of time and money that, really, especially ahead of the 3rd directive, which will probably make that the first step to a licence for a bigger bike.... a waste of time, money AND opportunity...

But your call.

EFA.

You may get lucky with the Sanya: it looks enough like any other commuter bike that it's not going to attract attention. Remember, I didn't even get asked what my de-branded CM125-copybike was.

You could just strip the decals off, slap some filler and paint over any engraved brand stamps (or just duct-tape over the lot of them), and there would be nothing "in their face" to provoke a check of the test vehicles list.

Worst case, you'll get sprung at the Mod 1 and lose out on £15.50, which is going to be cheaper than swapping around 125 bikes unless you've got ninja-negotiating skills.
