I own a motorcycle purely for the thrill of riding occasionally. In the Spring and Summer I'll commute sometimes too but really its just for fun rides and its stored now for the Winter.
I rode MX from 7 years old to 20! Then I got into riding sports bikes - for commuting mainly the first time around - and never returned to MX. Why? Dunno, just liked road more I guess for the odd ride. I have a Land Rover Disco for off-road thrills now ____________________ Bike: Ducati Monster 1100 evo

But with a road bike you can get the 'thrill or adrenaline' if that's what you're after whilst riding to work or going shopping.
Unless you happen to work in a forest riding off road is more of a dedicated activity that you have to go out and do. Similar to doing a trackday. ____________________ Yamaha FZR400RR 3tj

Because without biking... I can't wear my alpinestars! Simple as
It makes commuting to work something to look forward to, and the return journey equally as fun. Again, riding in autumn -> winter, there's that added rush of not knowing what to expect on the roads etc.
I use biking as my dopamine fix as well as a sense of identity now. All the coolness of strolling into work looking like a baddass is a welcome byproduct. ____________________ The Tot 2019 Z1000SX - 2007 R1

People drive cars because it gets them from A to B faster than horse and cart. They don't care that they drive a car, it means nothing to them.
People who ride motorcycles ride because of the passion of riding, for the thrills, the spills. Motorcyclists ALL have a connection with each other that MOST car drivers don't, that's why we give a nod of respect when we pass each other, because we understand each other, because we acknowledge each other.
The main difference between riding a bike and driving a car is that you don't just turn a wheel and TELL it where to go. You move, and the bike moves with you, like you're both one, like flying.
It doesn't get more passionate than that, and THAT is why I ride. ____________________ He who wants to keep his garden tidy doesn't reserve a plot for weeds. |

I think the main question you are asking is why do people commute if they love riding? (sort of )
I used to ride MX, it became expensive, I didn't really enjoy it, didn't like jumping but loved the adrenaline.
On the roads, as someone said, wherever you are going you enjoy yourself. I enjoy pretty much every ride I go on. Whether it be work, school, shops etc.
With motocross, it just wasn't my thing. I could see me doing road racing or just a few trackdays when I am older. I just prefer having grip and love hanging off instead of being in the air. Just like why some like football and some like rugby. Personally, I think football is shite but not too keen on rugby, even though I played it for like 7 years
It's just personal preference.
Some people get their thrill out of racing mx, road racing, touring, just commuting, riding with mates.
One thing we all have in common though is we love bikes and we love riding ____________________ Rusty '02 Vito Camper + CBR600F3 |

Because I can beat the rush hour traffic and do it at 130mpg, getting back home to my wife and kids much faster than any other form of transport.
Because I enjoy the satisfaction and savings that doing my own servicing and maintenance brings.
Because it's a skill with which I haven't stopped learning and developing my road-craft, and I don't think there will be a point where my learning will stop.
Because the 'community' of riders you become a part of is, on the whole, pretty great - I have met a lot of interesting and decent people in the few years I've been riding, that I'd probably never have done if I didn't ride. All because of a bike.

I agree with T0MMY to an extent; I consider myself a petrol head, anything with an engine is great!
I prefer the bike because it much more affordable access to high performance. I do rather enjoy driving my car though, and the luxuries and convenience that it brings with it. I would like to trade up to something a bit pokier, but anything <8s 0-60mph and the fuel consumption gets rather shoddy
That is another advantage of the bike; can ride like a loon and still returns 45mpg. Ride like a nun and get 60+ ____________________

I ride because its a hell of a lot easier than getting a bus everywhere... and in the long run, it works out cheaper too. Although I don't need my bike to get to work (2 minute walk, infact I can see my work from my living room window ), I use it to get back and forward to my girlfriend's house, my mates' houses and my dad's house.
I also love the occasional rideout we do. Always good fun ____________________ CBT Passed - 22 / 10 / 11 >> Theory Passed - 16 / 02 / 2012 >> Mod 1 Passed - 07 / 03 / 2012 >> Mod 2 Passed - 18 / 05 / 2012. |

Uh, because I have to commute, and commuting on a motorcycle is by far and away the most pleasurable way to do it that I've found so far.
I do agree though that since I don't enjoy biking in precisely the same fashion as the OP then I'm clearly not a real biker, I'm just one of the 99% who are wannabe posers. It would be futile to deny masturbating to MCN while wearing a primary coloured gimp suit. I'm probably doing that right now, in fact.
Say, does anyone nod to other bikers? I though I saw someone write about that but it sounds really freaky LOL. Do people really do it? ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.
