So, went to get the bike after work today to find the bloody thing wouldn't start, lights come on, but hitting the ignition just lights the oil light (does this all the time) and makes a rather alarming rapid clicking noise - kind of like the noise a toaster makes. Sounds like its under the battery somewhere so probably starter relay

Is this likely to be battery failure (I've had grips, both lights & satnav on pretty much constantly for last few rides, and indicators have been dimming the lights) or something rather more serious? It was fine starting this morning, but is kept in a garage next to the boiler rather than outside.

I'll take the jumpstarter to work tomorrow anyway, but want to be prepared for getting done over for recovering the thing.

The battery is almost flat, any more and you'll kill it (i,e. not even get a click). Lights etc will come on dimly but will kill the battery even more.

If you've been riding a short distance and got all those things powered off the bike likely thing is you've been using more than you've been putting in.

Either stick it on a charger overnight every night you have those things plugged into the bike.

Or set the idle a bit higher to generate more electricity for the bike to actually charge up the battery.

You won't get free energy!

The battery is going on for 6 years old anyway, and Its had the headlight mod done (so 110w vs 55w stock) which coupled with the grips on full probably isn't doing any favours. Obviously the low temps today were the icing on the cake.

It certainly won't be the journey time, shortest ride it gets is going on for 25 miles, and this morning it was nearer 30. Bump starter should hopefully get the thing home to where I can get it on a charger (bike park at work is basically in the middle of a roundabout, no danger of getting a lead to it)

The charging systems on the original Fazers are shit. Especially in town where the bike doesn't see about about 5k revs for extended periods.

With the 2 lights, heated grips sat nav etc I'd be surprised if it was actually charging the battery at motorway speeds.

Best thing to do is buy a new battery, go for a Motobatt gel battery as they are the dogs danglies although a little expensive.

My 5 mile commute, with heated grips and the twin lights was pushing the boat a bit but my battery is good so its never been a problem.

One way you know its low or on the way out is when with the lights on its starts dimming with the indicators as you said.
