Has anyone had extra training under the ERS?

If so, did you save on insurance? Did you get what you wanted from the training? Any other comments?

Reason I am asking is that I am considering going onto the RPMT. I have not come across anyone that has done any training via ERS, all the trainers who are on the register that I have spoken to claim to do 1 - 2 a year!

The only reason I need to go on the RPMT is to hopefully open some doors in the post test training area but on its own might not be financially viable without some 'bread and butter' courses like ERS (if that makes sense Smile )

I realise that perhaps this should be in New Bikers but figured that General Bike Chat might give me more of the audience I am looking for Smile

I did the ERS by accident as part of the Staffordshire bikesafe. I paid £30 for the day. I believe I got a 10% discount from Ebike. I found it quite interesting as training goes but I think a lot of this was down to the instructor being very good. Within the first hour he had pointed out two improvements to my riding style that did make a difference.

Dunno, there seems to be about a million advanced rider courses and I've never been able to work out the differences between them all.

I looked into it but it seemed to fall between BikeSafe (1 day) and IAM / RoSPA (as long as you need for a flat rate). Most insurers (especially comparison sites) don't seem to recognise it. The DSA are doing a marketing push on it at the moment, but I'm not really seeing the merits compared to IAM / RoSPA.

I remember one being riding in too high a gear, can't remember the other now but i think it was related to low speed manouvering.

AFAIK the ERS is only a one day evaluation with a fairly good list of insurers who will give a discount. IAM is several days based over a few months. I didn't get any benefit or discounts from the insurers when I tried.

I want to do the ROSPA next, mainly because I believe that it appears to be the most professional.

For info this is off the ERS website, most I tried offered a discount.

Are you sure this was the ERS Marki?

Usually the ERS includes an assessment and then a course, 1/2 day, 1 day, 2 day etc and a certificate at the end.

Bikesafe is just an assessment of your riding, usually from a serving Police Officer, not a qualified instructor!

Laughing 110% sure. I booked up for the bikesure (bikesafe?) course subsidised By Staffordshire County Council at a cost of £30. On the day there were only two of us with the instructor, a guy named Mike Moloney who runs Peak rider training https://www.peakridertraining.com/index.html .

A couple of hours into the day Mike mentioned that he was impressed with the quality of riding and he was evaluting me for the ERS. That is all it really is, an evaluation. I guess if you don't reach the standard then you may require a day or two training. At the end of the day I received a marking sheet showing the various parts of the assessment and how I scored on each one. A few days later I received a certificate in the post. No money changed hands other than the original payment.

I checked on ebike and there was a 10% difference in the quotes I received if I included the ERS. That simple really.

Ripped off the 'net.

Quote:
The assessment will identify your main strengths and weaknesses but there is no ‘pass’ or ‘fail’ - no test is involved and you cannot lose your licence. If your riding skills are satisfactory, the process ends there and you will be issued with an ERS certificate.

If you do need training, the trainer will prepare a personalised training plan for you and concentrate on specific areas needing attention, rather than taking a ‘one size fits all’ approach.

Once you've completed your training, you'll receive a report and a ‘DSA Certificate of Competence - Enhanced Rider Bonus’, which then qualifies you for an insurance discount.

What someone needs to do is sit down and draw up a table of all the different courses you can do and the pros/cons of each.

Well, I'm waiting! https://th816.photobucket.com/albums/zz87/Denise-66/th_smiley_waiting.gif

Cheers Marki, that's interesting. Being cynical, I'd assumed that ERS was essentially a hook to get you to sign up to a training course, since it's not a fixed price deal.

I might have another look into it in the spring then.
