I know its not exactly a bike question but Im too worried to care now. Can a camera facing you in the front catch you speeding? I know that if it flashes twice behind you - you've had it. What if it flashes before your eyes, even though its facing the opposite traffic? The oncoming traffic was stationary so pretty much sure it flashed me.

As long as you keep your eyes closed it cannot recognize you.

If you have no number plate on the front it is difficult to ID the vehicle (but not impossible if the polis have been alerted.)

It really depends on speed. 40 in a 30 and they will likely forget about it.

If you were doing 60 in a 30 they may try and ID you via other means.

Yup, wouldn't be worried otherwise.

Most speed cameras (if not all) cover both lanes of traffic (oncoming and outgoing), if that's your question.

depends on camera type, simple as that

gatso style, ones that flash cannot do you forward facing

the other ones, generally blue and don't flash, they show a bright red light iirc, will do you front on, bike or car depends on if the prosecuting body can be arsed.

as you said it flashed you have nothing at all to worry about.

i set one off in Sunderland nearly 2 wks ago and nothing. (did the same yrs ago on the a68 too)

I thought "Dragon Teeth" speed cameras are digital and upload the photos directly?

https://www.1stdrive.com/dragons%20teeth.JPG

And normal camera with the straight lines have film in them and have to be collected?

https://s0.geograph.org.uk/photos/95/27/952700_5899943f.jpg

Just a random related fact.

I've ridden past the straight lined cameras towards them at speeds of 80/90mph and they've never flashed.

The reason they have never flashed is most probably down to the fact that most of them don't carry film. Normally the only ones that carry film are located on potentially busy roads, or high crash zones.

That is what I was informed by the local plod when I was talking to them a few years ago.

They'll prolly be set to still flash though no film.

I know what ever style of camera used, they are not very JCB digger, heavy towing chain and bonfire proof anyway.

Plenty have been converted. The post about the different types of lines above it incorrect. 4 cameras near me have been converted to digital (with bigger flashguns) and still use the older style line based radar system.

I think I may have got flashed in the car this morning also.

It was on the a20 on the way out of london, speed limit is 40. Went into the 'grid' at 47ish. Put the anchors on and left at about 30. I didn't see it flash but it was extremely sunny so I doubt I would have known.

*fingers crossed*

Indicated 47, minus 10% for common speedo overread = 42.3 mph.

I'd be surprised if cameras were set at bang on the limit, you may get lucky. Also depends how quickly you slowed down.

I believe a digital gatso still uses the same lines generally.

While a truvelo, (front facing) will have three thin and very closely spaced lines quite close to the camera. They have an ultra-violet flash I believe, so you don't tend to notice it so much.

Just because you've seen a flash doesn't mean you will get done - as above, it may be out of film, or been set to flash to scare people.

I thought the Gastos has some sort of 'type approval' or specification that only allows the police to prosecute with a picture from the Gatso if the vehicle was moving away, regardless of whether one coming towards it was obviously speeding.

Forward facing Truvelos can get you, obviously, as G pointed out.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/b/b2/Gatso_Camera.jpg/200px-Gatso_Camera.jpg

forward facing, these flash some type of red light iirc

https://www.speedcamerasuk.com/speed-camera-types/truvelo-speed-camera.jpg

if its the top type, you will not be prosecuted unless you were moving away from it.
