Any good? I haven't spent anytime researching where they go, how they fit, but from what I generally gather they are a bit like BMX stunt pegs that keep the shiny bits off the tarmac.

Any opinions as to their worth, are they universal, any good ones/bad ones?

From what I can tell they mount on somewhere strong on the CBR they go on the frame fairing mount and screw directly into the frame.

Bear in mind that they exist only to protect the engine and frame, everything else appears to be sacrificial i.e. the engine, wheels. forks, swing arm etc.

Also bear in mind a lot of BCF pictures of crashes. Perfect condition crash bungs, but bike is written off totally.

Saved my GSXR from a drop when pulling it out the shed, didn't notice a patch of ice.

Glad I had them.

Have them on my Hornet, no intention of getting rid of them. IMO they look fine, mine blend quite well as they're metal, not rubber.

They're basically skate board wheels. They are good and bad really. If they aren't designed well bits of the bike will still get mashed up in a crash, the bungs themselves can smash bits of fairing, the bungs can twist snapping engine mounts etc.
So well designed ones will have a special fitting kit that might be quite complex and will use special bolts that will shear before destroying your frame.
On a track they work well, on the roads they won't help at all in a collision which is the main type of accident. They can also allow your bike to slide further and potentially into things!
If i had a sports bike i'd probably get some though.

Some crash bungs are just laughable - small plastic mushroom mounted on the fairing, steer clear of these.

I had some R&Gs on my ZX6R and they prevented any damage in a low speed slide I had.

Basically, the can help in low speed offs, high speed crashes are more of a lottery, but you can expect lots of damage either way if you come off at high speed. They're not miracle bike savers.

R&G are prolly the best and they have good instructions for fit etc.
You can more or less protect every part that would contact the road in a spill. This does not cover hitting something other than the road.
People who have wrecked frames and fairings probably were going so fast or hit something vertical so bungs or no bungs the bike would have been mashed.

Not cheap though.

I would fit unless the bike looks like a prick with bungs.
They have worked well for me. Speshally when I pushed my stupid bike over in a stupid petrol station whilst trying to rotate a stupid rear wheel to get the stupid air valve to where the stupid airline could reach it.
No damage to bike just pride dented.

Firstly, don't go for the cheap ones.

Secondly, R&G's fitted properly will save a lot of damage to the bike in most events where it slides down the road.

Saw and R1 once, had bungs on and the top of one was shaved off. Inspected the bike and there was NO damage anywhere on the bike. If he replaced the bung you wouldn't have known it had been down the road at all.

Story was he was going round around about at a fair pace in the wet and the front tucked. Classic lowslide and it saved all the fairings for the sake of £50. Well worth it IMHO.

Saved my fairings about 3 times or so from stupid drops Laughing

Also saved my engine casing in proper spill. On my 2nd or 3rd set, totally worth it. Still try not to be a clumsy fuck though Thumbs Up Embarassed

You say you haven't spent any time researching them, have a quick look at the right set for your bung and see if fitting is straightforward or not. On my ZX6R a hole needed to be cut in the fairing for one of the bungs to be mounted.
