Pushing around a heavy bike

How do I get better at this?!

I have just bought a 600 Bandit and the entrance to my garage has a steep lip. When I try and reverse it out or in, I literally cannot get the momentum to get it over the sloped lip and its a mental effort that usually involved me nearly dropping the bike a hundred times. What is the solution? Before you ask, yes I am physically bigger than Rossi. Smile

It's a combination of practice and manning up. It probably doesn't help that the Bandit is made of collapsed stellar material, though.

If the lips a decent size (more than a few inches tall) then try getting yourself something like some wood chipboard and make it into a nice ramp. It's what a did, however I just tend to bump up nowadays Laughing

Make a shallower concrete slope, build a turntable inside the garage, learn to spin it around on the stand, or get a bike that weighs less than a hippo.

I've dropped one of the 650 Bandits, they go down easier than Paris Hilton on a 48 hour bender.

Are you pushing it from the side or are you sat on it? If not the latter, give it a go. Some kind of ramp would seem the easy solution though, even if just an offcut of wood or brick.

Pfff, I'd make a lil cement ramp the width of the tire.

When I get home I have to ride up a 7" kerb, go through a gap no wider than my wing mirrors, ride onto wet, undulating grass and do a 6 point turn, (pushing backwards on wet, slippery grass is not fun) so the bike is facing back in the right direction for the next day Laughing

All this on a 400lb + bike.

Practice will build up your confidence. Doesn't mean to say that you'll never, ever, drop it, as plenty of folk do. I'm a 5'8 weakling and have to move a heavier bike than yours - just concentrate and dont be afraid of something going wrong. I'll probably never get to the stage of doing it without thinking, but it's just got to be done. Go to your local bike shop and watch how they sling bikes around without a thought - and ask about their technique (not that a showroom compares with a real-world driveway with gravel, slopes etc)

on my bike i find it easier to sit on my bike to move it back wards into my garage going up a little slope with a lip on end than using the hand thingies

I have a similar set up where my garage sits at the top of a steep incline with a small flat area, which is just big enough to rest the bike on. I sit on the bike to get it in and out of the garage - riding in as there is no way I'm pushing it. And I carefully reverse it out.

I can move the bike (Hornet 600) on a flat surface but sitting on it for me feels safer and less likely to drop it!

i reverse mine down a steep hill at my driveway just make sure its on level ground before i start to turn it

Ride it in and lean forward. Jam the front brake on until the rear lifts, spin the rear around and when its reached the desired location then transfer your weight to the back of the bike.
