I have a 2 day trip next year in May with the bike club. We are heading up to the top of Scotland to enjoy some of the scenery - my first trip north of Inverness. Very much looking forward to it.

I've been trying to work out how to load up my bike. Load is probably too strong a word for a 2 day trip but I will need some extra clothes, and a towel (we are staying at a hostel overnight).

I currently have a backpack that I use for work and the 'boot' space under the pillion seat isn't too bad. I don't fancy using the backpack as it will hamper my enjoyment of the ride so i'm looking for some suggestions (possibly a tank back or tail pack) that will work with a ZX9.

Now thats pretty loaded!

How did you attach to the pillion seat and what types of luggage are on there? Smile

I used to use a rucksack and rather than wear it, I used a luggage net and some non-slip mat to lash it to the pillion seat, tail-pack style. That will easily accommodate a 2 day trip.

If you plan to tour more/longer then worth investing in a dedicated solution, but whether it's tailpack, tankbag, panniers, rack etc is usually down to personal choice. I now have a top-box and some throw-over panniers for longer trips.

even with panniers, i'm a fan of strapping a big bag to the pillion seat, as you can get loads in.

You could use a ruck sack but huge drysacks are pretty cheap on ebay and better in my opinon. They are good becaused they are fully waterproof, and airtight, so you can squish clothes and sleeping bag down, to make a smaller firmer package, and then fold over and seal.

I cant remember the size of the one I got but I'm thinking 50L for £10 this is probably clarkson style exaggeration but they are still good.

Panniers are good for everything that isnt clothes as the weight is lower and they are easier to get at the stuff inside.

Not sure I'd want to go to scotland at this time of year, but I guess its different strokes for different folks.

Get a bungee net and a couple of extra bungee cords and use to strap your backpack to the pillion seat - there should be plenty of places to hook too. I used to do this all the time on the SRAD/FZR, and if you cannot fit 2 days of shit in a backpack then you need to take a good long look at yourself. Wink Wink Razz

Backpacks are good as when you have to take them off, they're easy to carry about.

Valloire. Awesome roads.

@totalllama82

If you take off the pillion seat, you will see four loops, braided material, that you can turn so they poke out. Bungee onto them.

I had cheapo panniers, that leak, an Oxford tank bag with sat nav in it, roll matt, tent, sleeping bag.

Niceone matey. I reckon the backpack idea with the non slip mat and a cargo net will do it.

My first trip so I reckon ghetto style should cut it Laughing

I used an Oxford tail pack which extended a bit more if needed.
Used netting and bungies to tie to the rear (B1H Ninja)
I also took a tank bag.
I agree with the no rucksack, it didnt make my journey that nice.
If your going for a couple of days then IMO just take a tail pack - I had way to much stuff for a 2 week stay, and could of used just the rear on its own Thumbs Up
