Fantastic Rolling Eyes

Went to start the bike today, clutch in, starter turns over, but you are met with a massive clunk noise, it turns over da da da donk da da da donk

Tried choke, applying throttle, upped the idle speed a little just in case.

Battery is perfect, 13.0V showing.

I got it running, but it has this issue with the clutch switch where it just doesn't work sometimes, so got it in gear and it cut out.

And repeat.

Shit mate. How annoying.

I wish I knew the answers but all I can do is give ya a bump! Thumbs Up

Saying that Paddy, is it not time to trade that one in for another, seems like it's just a problem after another.

At least the fork seals aint forked anymore though Wink

Nah, i'll see this bike to the end.

Aside from the little issue of it not working, its great.

A clutch switch is usually a very simple, small switch. Similar to a front brake light switch.

They do occasionally fail, usually by the small switch inside sticking. I have had results by taking them apart and cleaning them, but it isn't an expensive bit to change.

Bike cuts out when put in gear = sidestand switch fault.

Mine also relies on the clutch switch by the looks of it, or something somewhere is earthing somewhere..

It started ok today... bit odd really, it seems to throw up the FI code everyday now though... the usual ride off, flick killswitch off and on doesn't fix it, but does that weird backfire that carbed bikes do. None of my FI bikes have done that before Neutral

If it was the clutch or sidestand switch the starter motor would not operate at all. Both cause the FI to go into 'limp-home' mode if faulty.

Sounds more like the sprague clutch taking the rotation from the starter motor to the crankshaft. It sounds like it is not engaging correctly.

Sorry, I'm crap at actually typing what is wrong. Sometimes the starter doesn't even spin, the switches..anything electrical on my bike is currently hit and miss.

There is no limp-home mode on Suzukis. Either they run or they don't run. The closest thing that comes to 'limp mode' is if the clutch switch is permanently in - that will invoke a neutral fuelling map and knock a few hundred RPM off the rev limit.

The starter always relies on the clutch switch being pulled in - it won't work without that. It also relies on the bike EITHER being in neutral OR the sidestand being up (or both).

So, if the bike starts in neutral, but cuts out when you put it in gear, either your sidestand is down or the sidestand switch it telling the ECU that the sidestand is down. If the sidestand is up then the switch is at fault.

Another real favourite for going wrong is the red kill switch on the right hand cluster. My mate had a 2-yr old GSXR with a bad kill switch and it drove him barmy by randomly not starting (or turning over) until he sussed it.

I recently found a fault with the sidestand switch on a GSXR600K7.The wire was chafed through where it went between the swingarm and the back of the crankcases. It should measure about 6.8k ohms one way but not the other. This is why it is not possible to just short out the connection under the tank as this will restrict power until fixed/repaired/replaced with a diode and a suitably sized resistor.Or a new switch.

If the starter solenoid was suspect, disconnect the heavy duty lead going to the starter motor.Connect a multimeter across the heavy duty posts of the solenoid with the meter set to resistance.Press the starter button and watch for a dead short/zero ohms indication. If there is any resistance higher than a few ohms the solenoid is FUBARed.Placing a screwdriver across the terminals should start the engine if the solenoid is still suspect. But this does not do the tool any good.

If you try to bridge the terminals on the solenoid make sure you use a rubber handled screwdriver and you don't do it if there is petrol vapour anywhere... kaboom!!!!

Hi

A half turn over followed by a thonk sounds to me like a cylinder is full of petrol. Leaking carb float / leaking injector. However if this is the case after the first attempt it will just go thonk and won't turn over at all.

All the best

Keith

I'll try and get a video of it... it is actually behaving itself now, but it will die again and I'll get a video.
