hi all, im new to all the mechanicy stuff, recently got myself a 92 zx600 D3 to work on over the winter, it was running when i got it and has been throughout but today it just wont start.
the only work i have done to ir recently is yesterday i took the clutch cable off from the bottom and took the rod out to clean all the casing as the viewing window was caked, and then put fresh oil in and it started and ran fine, i went in today to start it and the battery was a bit low so i put it on charge for a while and went back an hour or so later to try start it and it wouldnt start, it turns over and doesnt even try to catch, tried throttle and even with choke 1/4 1/2 and when choke is full it just pops form the carbs and backfires, could this be down to the clutch even though it started fine before because when i pull clutch when trying to start i hear a clicking from battery or is that normal. i have checked everything i can think of, im at a loss with this one. any advice would be appreciated.

Clicking is probably the starter motor solenoid, might be a problem with it or the wiring when you were messing around but as you had a flat battery be worth trying it with a known good battery first. You could use jump leads with a car battery just to see if it will start OK with that.

the click seems to be coming from the battery and i have tried with a booster and it just turns over as though its flooded but i tried a few hours later and it was the same, and when i put choke on it just pops and then backfires.

In that case pound to a pinch you've disturbed something when you've been messing, I'd go over what you've done and look for anything untoward or disconnected. You haven't had the plug leads/coils off have you??

Yeah to clean the plugs but its been started since then. all i can think is that it was flooded as all i did was put the battery on charge. ill have a proper look over it tomorrow and if i don't get it working then ill have to strip it.

Sussed it. took bowls off the carbs and cleaned all the crap out and cleaned float needles and it was trying to start so once i knew it wasn't anything serious i set about taking plugs out and cleaned em with a drill and wire brush and bent the bottom out a tiny bit. popped em back in and one touch of the starter even with battery nearly dead it fired up and i did a little dance XD Thanks for your advice bezzer

Might be worth checking the fuel tank for crud at the botom. And, if you have one, the inline filter.

First thing i did along with swilling it out with redex to dissolve crap and then cleaned it and ran seafoam through with super unleaded. it smoked like a 2 stroke lol
