basic reasons for failiure of an MOT relating to Horn.
Quote:

c. In the case of a motor bicycle first used on or after 1 August 1973 a sound which is:
(i) not continuous or uniform
(ii) strident i.e. harsh or grating.

MOT manual also explicitly states that 2 tones are illigal, however there is no specific decibel limit, it only mentions if its too quiet to be heard by other road users then its a fail.

Cheers
John

My cars have two tones.. Makes it quite loud. But they pass every time. Possibly because they're hidden under the bonnet??

Just for clarification - does the MOT manual specifically state that dual-tone horns that sound simultaneously are disallowed or is it just where the two tones sound at different time?

apologies, I wasnt very clear on that, here is the exact reason for failiure.

Quote:
a motor bicycle fitted with a gong, bell. siren or horn which emits two or more alternating tones

So the stebel nautilus and other 2 horn set ups are perfectly legal, so long as they do not alternate between tones.

Just put the stock one back on for the MOT, it's hardly rocket surgery.

And read RTA 1988 Section 67 (6).

Clarification: 'Duel Tone' & 'Two-Tone'
Regs for cars I believe actually demand a duel-tone, horn; one which provides two, distinct 'notes', in order to cover a range of the audible frequencies.
Police Cars, (I believe) used to achive the 'Nee-Nar' Siren noise they had in my youth, by putting a Lucas three pin indicator flasher between two horn cones, so one sounded then the other....
That;s a 'two-tone', the two notes seperated by time, not sounding similteniousely.

Colonol Bogie, Whistling Dixie, 'play me a tune' air-horns, as popular at the same time as 'Dukes of Hazard' was screening on network TV for the first time..... were naff then, and no less naff now.....

Even the little electroinic ones with five different siren/intergalactic space phazer gun effects, we got as kids to boilt to the handlebars of our Raleigh Grifter.....

If you keep the standard horn, and simply plug any 'auxilliary audible alert device' off the circuit, though, becomes a grey area... you HAVE a complient and functioning horn.

Whether drowning it out with an air-horn, would come under other laws... and provided you aren't making a noise like a police or emergency siren?

If sufficiently load or offensive, Probably 'Anti-Social Behavior Act'

If it whistles Dixie or Plays Colonal Bogie, probably the Mental Health Act....

Yup I've had the Stebel Nautilus fitted to the GPZ, then later transferred to the Bandit - so been thru 3, maybe 4 MOT's without even a mention Thumbs Up

Jesus it's not rocket science.

Stebels produce a "chord" by combining two notes Simultaneously. No different to a truck horn. Both bikes in my garage have them and I'm soon to mount one on the car. Legal.

Two-tones don't play simultaneously. Illegal.
