SO FAR IVE GOT MY EYE ON THE HONDA VFR400 THE HONDA CBR400RR THE YAMAHA FZR 400 AND THE GSX 400... COULD DO WITH A LITTLE HELP AS TO WHICH ONE TO GET. WILL BE BUYING IN JANUARY.

By this age, condition is going to make much more difference than comparing original bikes off the production line.

Out of curiosity, why a 400? Most 400's are geting rather old these days, but still command a premium price tag for what they are. Can get a newer tidier 600 for the same money. It's certainly why I bought a 600 and not a 400.

SV650 with sorted suspension.

400's are all old and tired by now. Its hard to find a good one. The SV is more modern, probably cheaper, makes about 10bhp more power, more comfortable and more practical.

Spend a few hundred quid sorting the suspension (the difference in price between a curvy SV and a mediocre condition VFR400 NC30) and you'll end up with a better bike.

G's first comment was probably the best answer you could get. But if i had to choose i'd have one of the hondas, simply because i've never had a major problem with a honda and they tend to age better

Having ridden a VFR400, its a nice bike, I think I would prefer a CBR400 personally.

Still non sporty 400's are alright, CB400 Super Four is fantastic as a non sports 4, but again... why a 400?

Ah, this is the guy who's really easy to wind up and flies off the handle at any perceived slight...I saw the CBR250 thread.

I would want one of the Hondas personally. I had a CBR400RR and that was a great little bike. I love 400s but they're so expensive for what they are, 600s are better value and easier to find. I would advise you to consider a 600 instead of a 400 but I don't want to get called a "sausage"

If it was my choice of those 4 I'd have the vfr, absolutely LOVED mine, it made me smile literally every time I rode it, would definitely say that qualifies as fun. As and FYI the NC24 isn't really rare, just not very popular, it was only made for 2 or 3 years, and was quickly superseded by the NC30, an all round better bike. The noise will be different between the 2 as the firing order changed. Imo the 24 is a little better, sounds like half a v8.

The CBR is a good bike too, and is generally cheaper than the VFR, no silly plug sizes, insurance was a little cheaper. NC23 is good, make sure you go for the 88/89 RR, its better than the Aero. NC29 has the best forks, but I'm not too sure how else it differs to ride.

GSXR suffers from carb and electrical problems, very little known about them, and parts are a pain to get hold of. FZR isn't a whole deal better, but I don't know much about them at all.

Loads of people gave me the whole 600 vs 400 thing, but if you find a decent 400 and its what you want, go for it, I feel like they have a bit of character about them, whereas 600's are a bit samey and disposable, hence the lower price tag, but maybe that's just me?
