In a different town & you spot a tattoo shop, ignore or pop in for a nose.
Same with conventions, a couple of local ones a year for me plus I used to go to Brugge untill it stopped.
I nip in & seen some amazing designs, also been to shops & conventions in N'I, Belgium, France & Holland.
The missus has tattoos so no problem, just balancing things out when see can't walk past a shoe shop Very Happy

I'm very choosy when it comes to who inks me. I wont go to someone unless I have seen and heard good reports or they "sell" their skills to me. My first tattoo the line work did not settle correctly so I never went back to the artist. I found another artist who sorted it out and he continued to work on me for a few years until I moved to Belfast again.

In Belfast I went to an old friends studio. Mainly because I know the old friend, after being too old to continue working, would not leave his shop, still with his name attached to it, in hands that he could not sign his name too. The same artist done my work each time I went there.

Once I ventured to a friends artist when visiting them. That ended up with an infected tattoo and also a lump that needed cut out. I still have a patchy tribal effect and a scar on my leg from that one.

When I moved to Portsmouth I spent a day trawling the tattoo artists here until I found one I thought I could trust. Check the signs. Are they showing interest? If not then I walk away. I walked into one and the artist was laying on a couch in the waiting area and did not have the decency to even sit up when I walked in. That was a no and I walked out. Another one across the road I did not even speak to the artist before turning around. The person in front had a peice of work they wanted done and the artist did not even look at it for more than a second before deciding they wouldnt do it. Not even a talk about adapting it. They catagorically said no.

The one I settled on was a guy who knew what I wanted done and showed me a picture of one he had done before. He said he could fit me in in about 2 weeks. I informed him I was only in Portsmouth until Thursday and he decided to give his day off up and fitted me in on Wednesday. He was willing to give his day off up to ink me. Top dude.

The result, as many have seen on here, (the pink floyd scream tattoo) was fantastic and when I went to get the brickwork done a year or so later I had to track him down as he had changed studio's. He is the only artist I will go to in Portsmouth.

I'd happily go to the conventions, look at new shops etc, but I have my artist and I will stick to them.

I've waited over a year to get my back piece finished like Mr pink did (funnily enough the screaming face)

the artist doing it was out of the country for a while and I've been travelling a lot as well
but I'll wait to have him finish it rather than risk going to someone who I don't know
and not getting as good a job done
most of my tatt's were done by this guy or his wife who I've known for a while
and know there work well and I do recommend them to anyone
there studio is in Kingston

I've always wanted to design my own tattoo (has to be one of a kind) and get it done. Money and lack of designing has put it back a good few years though. Laughing

Finding a decent artist is also a worrying prospect.

Most of my work is unique to me. Even my floyd peice has a different mouth than the standard Scream tattoos. The norm is to have a mouth filled in with just red or with the marching hammers inside. Mine is unique because the artist added tonsils instead.

Louise I go to Alan Gill. He works at My Last One on Copner road. I'm at work at the moment so if snr could post my Tat pic as he knows what he's looking for it would give you some idea of his skill.

there is a newish tattoo shop in the Bullring Market in Birmingham, it looks like it came out of the 1960s (Bad flash on the walls, no photos of work etc) and has the word Tattoo's over the door.
No way would I let them ink me even if they learned to use an apostrophe.

Cheers Pink I shall look him up.
I know Daren Stairs is around the corner from me but he is booked up for months.
Was looking for some writing up my arm, nothing big, just a thin line with this
Some of it translated back is different so waiting on a guy to correct. From wrist to elbow roughly - Cant have nothing major due to work.

What I want to know, is how you know if you're being overcharged and let's you get a tat done, and then put on weight, lose weight of generally change build slightly, will this affect a tat?

I want a HRC logo in proper colours but not too big on my left arm just below my shoulder; what should i be looking at? (about maybe 5x3 or 5x4 cm)

not an issue for me as I've been the same build / weight for 30 odd years
only issue is if you gain mass the tattoo will stretch with your skin and contract
and get stretch marks (not likely unless your pregnant) it shouldn't be an issue

as to size draw out both and see what fits best
as to cost depends on the artist and quality of work as a general rule its about £70 - 80 an hour
