Accurate oil level using a dipstick

Just changed the oil and filter on my 1997 CBR 600.

All the bikes I have had recently have had a sight glass for the oil
level but this one has a dipstick.

The dipstick is shaped a bit like the liquorice in the old sherbert dips for those who remember them, like a double spatula.

It said put 3.7 litres in when changing oil and filter so this is about what I have put in and also poured what I took out into an old oil container and it reads again about 3.7 litres.

The reading I am getting is about 8/10 of the way up the first spatula. Now the bike is on its sidestand so I sit on it for a few minutes so the bike is straight, then take the reading by putting the dipstick in the hole but not screwing it down as it says in the manual I have. I doubt the ground is 100% even but I don't really feel what I am getting is accurate.

So does anyone else have dipstick and how do they take their reading and also if my reading is 8/10 up the first spatula, what sort of quantity of oil would be needed to cover the other 2/10 and all the second spatula, assuming thats the correct level. I am guessing that this will not be very much maybe a few 100 millilitres.

Certainly don't want to put too much in so any advice appreciated.

The oil level is nowhere near as critical as you're making it out to be. As long as it's not majorly overfilled, or the dipstick is dry, your engine wont die.

I tend to fill mine to about max. Ie: top groove.

Okay, so I will not worry too much. Just that the dipstick isn't really
like the one in the picture above and although common sense sort of tells me where the upper mark is, I'm not 100% sure.

By virture of the fact that the oil light goes out then I suppose it must be okay.

Did you charge the new filter with oil? That may be why the reading is slightly low, less oil in than came out.
