Just wondered if anyone has started venturing into LED lights in the home yet?

In an effort to reduce costs of leccy further I've been looking into a few sites lately and its starting to look like the light output for standard house bulbs is being matched by LED equivalents with obviously a lot less power draw/consumption.

Thoughts? Anyone trying it at the moment?

LED's are getting to the stage where they are worth looking at
not only do they use less power but there lifespan is far longer than normal bulbs
I plan to fit a load of them in my kitchen in the new year, particularly along the kick plates to give floor lighting
and also under the wall units

only issue is the cost atm but they will get cheaper as the technology evolves

From what I've seen the tone of light is so cold that it's unreal. Just a horrid bluish white light.

Prefer the glow of tungsten any day.

I wouldn't bother personally. LEDs are good if you want things flashing at high frequencies, if you want lots of different colours, or something with a high intensity like a brake light. For volume lighting though I don't think they are the way to go, HIDs give massive amounts of light for very little energy. LEDs produce huge amounts of heat though it might not seem like it. Also, as has been said, the white LEDs can be quite clinical. Just use normal bulbs or energy saving types, they are real cheap Smile

ive installed a few,
at his point in time they arn't quite up to the job of general lighting,
but as accent lighting they are quite good,
the cost is still a bit high,
you can get fairly decent fluorescent down light, that don't cost a hell of a lot

Whilst LED lights are nice as they last a heck of a lot longer (think in the range of 4-8x longer) I do not like them as much as the lights we have because, as has been said above, they tend to emit a really cold light.

I think a normal white LED lamp has a colour temperature around 5500-6000K which is ice whitey/blue and is very cold and I don't like that kind of light in my house.

The lights I use are halogen with a colour temperature around 3500-4000K and that is just warm enough to make the room look nice and 'homey'.

However, when it comes to cars/bikes, I prefer having headlights more like LED light colour temperature, ice white. It appears to give a much better view of the road at night and I find yellowish headlights aren't very nice to look at from the driver's seat.

If you want them for electricity savings, go for it, but make sure you don't mind cold light and personally, I hate in houses.

Cheers! Thumbs Up!

In the heater thread someone mentioned that power used = heat generated. Not entirely convinced in the case of lights. But my circa 10w led torch seems to make an appropriate amount of heat for that.

LEDs do also degrade with time, but do seem to be the best option for longevity - and prices are getting pretty reasonable.

When it comes to lights, generally the more power in watts, the hotter the bulb will get depending on the type of bulb and it's efficiency. Some bulbs can be as inefficient as 10% light, 90% heat.

Think about a halogen bulb, they put out a ton of heat and that is because they tend to be very high wattage.

Watts = joules per second. A bulb of 60W of equal efficiency to a bulb of 120W will put out a similar amount of light but the 120W light will put out a fair bit more heat as more energy is passing through the filament.

Cheers!

If I were you, I'd got to homebase and get their own brand LEDs if you're looking for bayonette replacements for 60W bulbs. They dish out about 470lm so it's nowhere near as bright as a 60W incandescent bulb, but I prefer to go for indirect subtle lighting.

I've got 4300K daylight wihite for my spotlights and uplighters, but 2700K warm whites for main room lighting in my bedroom, front room, bathroom and landing. Does the job and lights up instantly!

I generally describe it as black light.

Depends really, strip lights I quite like the LED ones as they chuck out so much light, but you need to place it the opposite way to which you are facing, so if you're facing this way ------- then light needs to go | that way.

I use them for spotlights in my kitchen, because halogen spotlights are shit, they last about 10 minutes before blowing, tired of spend money replacing them for them to pop not long after, the LED ones are far more reliable and give more light.

If you go to a good place which makes LED lights you can opt for the more duller light instead of the super bright white light.
