Why does this always happen!

My extractor fan failed two days ago. Not knowing how to fix it and not bothering to replace it. I called somebody round to fix it.

The second he came round it worked perfectly as if there was nowt wrong with it. He charged me a call out fee and told me I was wasting his time.

The second he left it started playing up again.

This appears to happen with many electrical items I have washing machine, CCTV camera system even computers.

Why oh why? Are any of you guys repairmen? Do you carry around some sort of RFID device which tells devices to behave and then to malfunction the moment you leave?

Gah!

Erm...

I don't know anything about extractor fans but I successfully replaced mine in about ten minutes. I merely looked up the make and model, searched ebay for a similar fan, and bought it. When it arrived, I simply isolated the extractor fan circuit using the isolator switch, and then replaced the fan wire for wire. It just had a chocolate block connector inside it for live, neutral and earth. I replaced these as per the diagram on the fan, and then screwed the whole shebang into place. Flicked the isolator switch and Voila! It works.

(not Wallah as some people seem to say these days... including Stan Stephens in his CMM articles...)

I had the same with the dentist a few years ago, all night I was up, only time it wasn't hurting was when I was dosed up on painkillers and had a bag of peas on my face.

Got an appointment, got down there and it pretty much stopped!

we sparks have a magic touch,
its all in the way we caress the switch,
electricity learns to love us,

if it was me that turned up at you house,
i would have at least, pulled the switch off and checked the connections,
if nothing was found there, depending on your temperament i would have pulled the fan as well and checked the connections there too,
95% of the time when you have intermittent faults, its just a loose wire,
a slammed door or some thing like that will have it going again

Then I would have condemed it saying it was dangerous and probably caused by something in the distribution board. Using a lighter I'd have secretly blackened a couple of RCD's and ahd to go out to find some more while still being on the clock. Luckily you're under 75 because after that age your house would definately need a full rewire to be on the safe side.

Fixed.

that may be how it is in the uk, but in nz, we are alot more accountable,
if some one thinks we are taking the piss, then all they have to do is contact the electrical registration board, and if its found that we did do any thing wrong, bye bye licence,
no licence = no work

im sure it happens, but re-wiring a house in the uk, is a fucken arse of a job, i wouldnt willingly want to do the work if i could at all avoid it

We burn sheep too and cows, but that is only to piss the farmers off.
