Years ago I had a really nice quality puncture repair kit for bicycles etc. It had decent size thin rubber patches that matched the thickness of innertubes and so expanded the same amount and a nice chunky tube of solvent glue - much better than these efforts you get nowadays, with tiny but thick rubber patches that don't stay stuck.

I just dug out one of thses thin coffin-box ones and the glue is dried up, patches are crap anyway. I've also tried the self-adhesive patches with no success there either.

Where can I buy a really nice repair kit nowadays that works properly like the old ones did?

I used slime in my tyres and stopped getting punctures.

But if you have patches already on then slime will not work as it can dissolve the glue.

That's its main purpose and what it was origionally sold for IIRC

If you go in halfords you will find it with all the push bike stuff

It only works on smaller punctures though, so if you end up with a biggish piece of glass going through your tyre you end up with a massive green stripe up your back Laughing

A halfway decent puncture repair kit costs about the same as a new tube.

Buy a new tube.

Anyone remember those nylon insert strips you could put between the tyre & the inner tube? I stuck a set in my Raleigh Europa in the early 1980s and never had a puncture again (was averaging two a week before).

Well, thanks for the tips and ideas, but you see, my wheelbarrow has a puncture - on the inside of the tube. Gotta be a patch I'm afraid.

Evans cycles seems to to the best quality kits but a) there isn't one near me and b) their website loads pages with a looooooooooooong pause where it freezes IE7 and that usually means it's trying to load some crappy marketing malware so I guess I'll have to put another cheapo patch on it untilI go back up the city Confused

I have anti puncture strips and still get plenty of punctures. For repair I use bits of cut up inner tubes instead of patches. I haven't tried a substitute for the teeny tubes of vulcanising rubber cement though - recommendations would be welcome.

You can buy Thorn Proof Kevlar belts for inside the tyre.

Another good idea is to watchout where you pedal then you don't get as many punctures.... Cool

Cheap tubes are fair enough instead of kits but a patch and a bit of glue takes up less space.
For longer excursions I take a tube but a good quality one as the cheap shit doesn't hold pressure and my tyres run at 55-60 psi.

I use a little box of Park Tools self adhesive patches. They come in a tiny box about an inch square and about 5mm deep and are transparent. You just get a few patches and a little square of sandpaper to rough up the rubber round the puncture.
They're made of a really soft rubber that even seems to seal well if the hole is near the seam on the innertube, plus, with them being transparent, you can see through them and tell when you've stuck them down well (hard to describe, but you can rub the patch on and see the bits you've not stuck down properly). Used them numerous times and never had one fail.

These are the ones: https://www.wiggle.co.uk/park-tools-puncture-repair-kit-super-patch/

I'm a wasteful bastard and just carry 2 tubes with me on the bike,if I get a puncture I just chuck the damaged tube in the bin. I don't have time for fixing punctures.

Can change a tube within 20 minutes at the roadside and repairing a puncture is a piece of piss. But I genuinely cannot be arsed to repair a puncture in my spare time when a decent innertube only costs a fiver.

When I was a kid I used to take my punctured tubes to our local tyre dealers who vulcanised them for free. What a nice guy! I must have had a grands worth of tyres off him after I learned to drive.
Niceness pays off somtimes.

Next time, don't bin them, send them to me instead.

I enjoy repairing punctures, tho I did have to retire a tube the other day. It had 8 patches on it, but the valve went.

Personally, I can only think of to specific occasions when the patch failed, or 'bled' from underneath it.

I prefer the feathered patches, like these:

https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/images/products/medium/Zefal-zefal-puncture-repair-patches-IMG25950.jpg

But I'll happily use the bog standard ones with no descernable difference in performance:

https://www.jjbsports.com/pws/client/images/catalogue/products/92408001/xlarge/92408001_black.jpg

They happily cope with 130psi.

As for vulcanising glue, just normal Halfords stuff works for me.

Spend a few minutes and a few pennies in front of the tv fixing them at night over spending a minimum of £3 for a new tube? No brainer I'm afraid.
