Why is it that the Police use the biggest and heaviest bikes you can get? Surely they would be better off with something lighter and more agile Question

They can fit more doughnuts in the panniers/under the seat of a big bike than a sports bike.

Plod over here have Blades and Gixxers! Laughing
I wouldn't like to be riding either, all day everyday though, mind you they'll get medically retired for chronic back pain I suppose.

Why would you think that big heavy bikes (perception) are not nimble and quick with the right person on board?

<----. Non-police man. Over 400kg, bike and rider.... <----

Also, in the wet... Search YouTube for Bedford and GTR1400

Plenty of forces have stealth sports bikes.

And Usually they have to carry a load of crap with them in the panniers, so those big buses are the obvious choice. I'm sure they can still shift though.

I've read that some uk police forces have used R1s and Fireblades.

Pan is a good bike from what i've read on here, and can lift it's skirt when asked.

I was going to add that the skills of a motorcycle copper usually make up for the bike's deficiencies , but after watching a telly program that follows candidates from trainee to full bike-cop... Thinking I bet they dropped it in the first month.

I've wondered this for years and so have many of the officers I have spoken to. Would love to read T.C's input on this.

Plod bikes carry a ton of gear we'd never dream of carting around. Anyhow I'd swap my 125 Vity for a R1200 anyday.

Ps.
To the pso tosser who stopped dead in front of me tonight on his three wheeler to nag a trucker parked on the opposite side of the road, try doing a fucking lifesaver and learn what hazard lights are for.

Just up the road in West Yorkshire they have a plain black 2011 fireblade, there is nothing to tell it apart from any other untill you get really close. the bottom of the screen (the bit thats usually blacked to hide the back of the clocks) is clear, that's where the camera is and the recording stuff is in a small tank bag. Sneaky feckers Exclamation

Pretty sure theres DRz's knocking about too....

Hi

Suspect that the bikes are quick enough for what they want to use on the roads, and quick enough to keep up with most people just by using a bit better observation.

All the best

I just thought that in somewhere like London it would be easier to duck and dive on something a bit smaller

(G would recommend a litre sportsbike Mr. Green)

I'd heard anecdotally that Strathclyde were/are reviewing whether it's safe to use their offroad bikes offroad. Rolling Eyes

You'll laugh, but coppers aren't even allowed to ride a pushbike until they've passed a course. I got that from a copper who'd been taken off driving duties for stacking too many vans. Double Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

They use big bikes to carry gear and for comfort during a full shift.
And I'll challeng any Sod on his Sunday Samuria against my K1300GT any day....

Probably depends on the particular force.

I remember quite a while ago a news bit on Hampshire police reintroducing basic driving courses (very basic) as their accident rate had gone up so much when they scrapped them.

All the best
