Hey guys,
Had my Derbi Senda R 50 for about 5 months now, anyway since day one, ive noticed the clutch/gears are very strange.

Basically, right from the garage i cannot wheel the bike by holding the clutch if its in gear. The gear doesn't disengage by simply holding the clutch and the bike needs rocking back and forth to knock it out of gear.

Once I get going, the bike (6 gears) goes 1 down, 5 up. All the gears are fine changing up and down and if im being a twat, i can sometimes hit neutral between 1st and 2nd. However, sometimes when im in 5 gear going for a change up, I knock the leaver up to get into 6th and it engaged neutral. Not a good look when going through town Embarassed

Do you think this is normal and just a tough gear/clutch setup from Derbi? I know cars are known for having different clutches between models and brands so does this occur with bikes too?

*NOTE: On the first day this bike took to the road (brand new), I was getting the bike from the dealership to home when the clutch went (10km's). Has been replaced with a new clutch during its last service.

check the oil level and clutch adjustment, it sound to as tho the clutch sint clearing properly. can it be tricky to get into neutral when you stop (say for a long wait at traffic lights)?

I presume its a two-stroke; and consequently the gear-box & clutch run in a sealed oil filled chamber, unlike a fourstroke that usually has the gearbox & clutch 'in unit' with the engine, the gears lubed by the engine oil.

1) has the gearbox oil EVER been changed?
2) is it the right grade?

My Montesa is a curiocity these days; it dates back to 'pre-unit' construction engine's when the gear-box was seperate from the engine, and they often had a 'dry' clutch in the primary drive between the two... but its 'in unit' in as much as the gearbox is in the same casing as the (two stroke) engine, and has a wet clutch, in the primary drive, that has its own oil bath. Consequently, runs heavy EP90 gear oil in the gearbox, but lighter 10w40 in the primary...

Get the wrong oils in the wrong holes, (err... is that a double negative?!?)...... fill the primary drive with EP90 you get a dragging clutch, fill the gearbox with 10w40, you get bike 'loosing' gears and finding falce neutrals!

Symptoms sound similar!

Sounds like the clutch isn't dis-engaging properly. Where the cable goes into the engine casing, is there a rubber cap close by?

My senda was exactly the same. Couldnt push it in gear with the clutch in and always used to find a false neutral changing from 5th to 6th. Clutchless changes used to help with the false neutrals but it still used to do it. I bought mine brand new and it did it from day 1.

Same here! The bike is brand new straight out the factory and therefore still has the nice little dealership ties that means they service and do all the dirty work for me for free.

Maybe its just the way these Senda's are, Its a small nightmare to change gears at a standstill and also a nightmare to change down while going along. Since the day the clutch gave out (coming to a stop, changed down the gears and the clutch released) its made me nervous of changing down before coming to a stop (well atleast down from 4th to 1st).

Cheers for your help guys Very Happy Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Edit: Yeah there is a rubber cap where the cable enters the engine and since the bike is brand new, im sure the gearbox is designed for the bike, Maybe they arn't set up correctly and from what i gather, the inside mechanics of the clutch on these are cheap and don't last well.

Sounds like Derbi bought their clutch parts from a guy who knows a guy...

I occasionally get false neutrals, think mine was from 4th to 5th and mine was WORSE when clutchless upshifting.

Mine pushes in gear but didn't when I bought it so we replaced the clutch plates and it was fine. I have a few mates with the same bike and theirs either dont or are very hard to push in gear.

With the downshifting from 4th to 1st, when I used to do that when I went into 1st I used to get a massive clunk so I taught myself blipping when downshifting. You may have heard of it before but if not, use the search and have a look around, its easy to pick up and has lots of benefits.

HTH Thumbs Up

I ride a mito and if its in gear I can pull the clutch and it feels like the clutch hasn't disengaged but when the engine is running you put it in gear and can feel the clutch drag for an instant. Then its OK.

Maybe cold oil is sticking the clutch together?

I've never known any issue with neutral apart from Its a bit hard to find but this is a different bike. Never heard of hitting neutral from any thing other than 1st or 2nd. I didn't think that was possible!
