Bike: 1995 GSXR 750ws

I have got the idle rate set up exactly as it specifies in the manual.

1200 (+ or - 100).

This is great but when I am at a standstill and the fan starts up, the idle rate starts to drop off significantly, to the point where I have to keep blipping the throttle to avoid a stall.

This is quite annoying and doesn't strike me as being something normal.

Anyone got any idea as to the cause?

Up the idle to 1300 when its warm?

Its stealing juice from your bike to spark AND spin a fan, seems to be stealing loads Laughing

Yes it was warm when I set the idle.

Is there any way of stopping this happening?

Is the battery charged? Even if the regulator/rectifier is functioning properly it would be drawing power for the battery.
Spin the fan by hand..checking for worn bearings or fan blades catching.
Is your rev counter reading correct? [how to check this i don't know...i go by ear...if it sounds like a BSB bike it's too high and if it chugs like a harley it's too low kinda thing....all very technical stuff]

Wish i could confuse you more.

Battery is charged and fairly new. The charging system also seems to be functioning ok.
Not sure if the rev counter is reading correct, it sounds about right. I have set it to idle at 2000 this evening which is high enough to prevent a stall with the fan running, but it doesn't sound excessive on tick over.

Checking the fan itself is a good idea, I didn't think of that. I will check it turns freely and also the wiring.
Maybe the fan wiring is shorting which would only happen when the fan switch in the thermostat housing actuates causing a current to flow through it.

Maybe its just a niggle I will have to put up with due to the age of the bike but if anyone has any other suggestions I would be grateful.

Thumbs Up

I was just about to suggest that you put an ammeter between the supply and the fan.
If the motor is shorting it will be drawing massive amounts of load.
Maybe even plugged by something in the blades.

On my TT600, i had the same thing. fan would kick in and the bike would drop to ~700rpm, but wouldn't stall, just sounded horrid.

When i got the cable to check the error codes, it turned out to be a short in the fan's wires. quick check of these and i found the problem.

Best bed i'd say is check there. also check the quality of your HT leads/plugs... even if the battery is okay, if the plugs or leads are rubbish the problem's gonna stay.

Dunc

This has been fixed.
I also started to notice running issues when it was wet outside in addition to when the fan was on.

It turned out to be a faulty HT lead which was split and sparking to the frame.
This had a noticable effect when there was extra load on the electrics or in the wet.

I have replaced all leads and changed the plugs now and it is running really well.

Thanks for everyones help.
