Been looking at a few carbon bits for my bike, and came across a bike for sale that was complete carbon bodywork, rather than small bits and pieces which add to the look of a bike. Personally thought it was too much carbon so what do you prefer, just subtle changes or cover the bike??

Carbon replacement parts that save weight = cool.
Carbon stick on stuff or carbon covers and things = teh ghey. I really don't see the point of spending money money making your bike heavier just to make it look like you've spent money making it lighter.

Personally I think for a road bike things like carbon panels are just a waste of money. They make no real difference on the road. Even on the track you wont feel the difference until you get to quite a high level of riding. I've got carbon panels on the track R1 but sprayed them black so no-one knows I've got them Mr. Green (I didn't buy the panels, swapped them for a standard set of fairings)

Save your money and get your suspension set up and some nice rubber - will make you enjoy your bike much more than any amount of carbon tat.

Thanks,

Damon

Naw, it's cool, that 500g weight saving will give you an epic advantage on the track.

You'll be using it for track racing, right?

Carbon swing arm = the coolest thing ever.
Stick on carbon tank protector = gayer than a gay with a cock up his bum.

Carbon fairings are damn cool and don't have to be left carbon colour, though they're so damn expensive i wouldn't use them on anything other than a very special road going race replica bike. On a track bike they will give some slight advantage until you have your first tumble and smash the shit out of them Laughing

If it's for cosmetics then I think it looks better when you have small details here and there in carbon rather than the fairings.

If you're adding the carbon goodies just to save weight you're probably better off skipping the breakfast fry-up and having a big shit before you go for a ride.

Carbon fibre is pretty cool when used in the right places on the right bike. IMO.

Get some stickers made up that say "painted carbon fibre fairing". That way you get all the aesthetic qualities of lots of carbon while keeping an original look etc.

I know what you mean about covers adding weight etc. But I added the carbon/kevlar frame covers and swingarm covers in order to protect the frame in case I had a spill (Throwing a bike into the kitty litter on a track can really take the enamel straight off )

but they're the only 2 covers on my bike, IMO mine isn't overkill. It's just enough to look different from all the other gsxr's you see. And not as expensive as you think ( around £2000 including the BST carbon wheels )

Hi

Done properly carbon fibre will save a load of weight. But most just seems to be for cosmetic reasons, with a load of strengthening added and no effort to remove the excess resin.

I know some people who make carbon fibre stuff for a living (and some GRP). All vac bagged and the results are light and very strong. Cost might make you wince though compared to basic molds.

All the best

Keith

Just planning on doing small bits to mine purely for cosmetics. Dont intend to take this bike on track.

In regards to the above pics, the GSXR does look nice, however the S1000RR is too much in my opinion.

I like the carbon fairings on things like Ducati 749r and the MV agusta super bikes.

I don't know if Carbon' looks' better or if one is simply sykologikally tricked into believing that it looks good because fast bikes use a lot of it. Therefore it follows that if you 'decorate' your 1997 Bandit with Carbon/Carbon-ette it will look cool-as.

Cool

I inquired about carbon for my fast bike to replace the OEM plastic shit around the frame and tank.
Mainly because it's really poor plastic trim with a carbon texture-ized finish.
But good carbon is shiny not texturized. Shocked

If I could get Shiny-Body-Colour panels made of plane-ole ABS it would do me fine.

Carbon looks good cause it shows that the owners has exhausted all other possible methods of making it go faster as has had to resort to spending silly money to get further advantage.
So sticking a carbon tank protector on a bandit is gash as it doesn't improve performance, and it's not a performance bike anyhow.
