Spend £100 on a decent SSD and it'll feel 5 times faster.

Don't skimp out on a shit PSU, get a 1000W modular in there, gold certified if possible for future proofing. Assume at some point you will be throwing in a card, which along with the rest of your setup, will be drawing some decent power.

Well my Rammstein still hasnt arrived. Apparently its upto 3weeks for delivery. It was shipped out on the 1st dec.
Hoping it will be here soon.

PSU - I think ihave about 600w in there atm, but will be looking for moar powerz

GFX - some msi nx8400gs thing that was free and has been sitting in a box for the past year doing nothing.
Gonna need a better card with extra GFXs and hdmi out on it, that will be post-new psu though.

You haven't recently bought any Hard Drives have you?
I went to buy a couple of 2TB Samsung spinpoint drives yesterday and noticed they'd shot up to £141!!!

A bit of googling later revealed that this is due to the flooding crisis in Thailand.

It doesnt seem to faze some people though. I'm building a core i5 rig for a work mate I advised him to wait until the prices have dropped again before I slam one in his new rig. Nope, he wants it now!

Nopes, dont need any.

But yeah, the floods have wreaked havoc for the IT industry.

Gig for Gig HHDs are the same price as SSDs.

Dont know if this helps, but there are some 2tb sammys for under a ton on amazon.

I said get a 1000W Modular for future proofing. Once you start putting high end parts in your PC, you will end up getting the bug and wanting to get better parts more often etc.

i7 930 is pretty over clockable as well and you wouldn't build a nice rig and put a shit GPU in it.

Yes, 560 / 570 / 580 / 590 are decent cards. Play BF3 no problem with them. A friend has a 560 and another 580 and they both play on high settings on BF3 without a problem.

With regards to the flooding, saw a report than Intel will lose $1 billion in revenue because of all the knock on effects of the flood.

A 1kw+ psu is a waste of money unless you are planning on running a pair of top end video cards. I've got an i7 950 with a gtx 480, a traditional hdd raid plus a pci-e ssd raid as well as a fairly hefty amount of trimmings all being fed by a quality 850w (corsair ax850) and frankly it doesn't even break a sweat unless the gtx480 is getting hammered.

Worry more about buying a top drawer PSU from a reputable manufacturer than the big bold (and often wildly optimistic) numbers printed on the box.

Oh and as mentioned, take the change you save and spend it on an SSD. Your first high performance SSD will be nothing short of a revelation in performance and is easily the biggest single upgrade you can make to almost any modern machine that isn't ram/cpu starved.

The higher the numbers don't mean the better, I know that. I paid £160 for my PSU because I know I will be pushing it to the max. I will put another 6990 in it soon as well as change the CPU and OC that.

yeh, that ax850 is a nice PSU, got the ax1200 in my rig, it quoted to put out 100amps on the 12v rail.

the 850 as more than enough for anything but exremely thursty systems, 70amp with ~90% efficiency at 100% load, not exceed 40db either.

compare that to a non branded 1000w psu that will struggle to make the current it states, by loader and less efficient

I've always taken the attitude of "PSU? that won't make it go faster, i'll just buy a cheap one." But then i have had 3 or 4 blow on me now. At least if you buy a high power one it won't be near it's limit and might live a little longer Laughing

Buy budget hardware to play budget games. You'll get exactly the same experience over a lifetime as some chopper spunking 4 times as much on bleeding edge gear, except he'll get the advantage of a year of new releases just before he dies in a puddle of piss in the nursing home. Thumbs Up

To be honest if i want to play games i'll do it on my xbox on which 95% of current games are designed to run. I have a pimped out PC as i am the most impatient man in the world. If i get bored and decide to start browsing the net in the time it takes a browser to open i'll usually get bored and open something else Laughing

Do you run that case with it's plastics and side on? Whilst I don't think a 560 is going to be long enough to foul the back of those drives, all that clutter isn't going to encourage the kind of airflow you want Neutral

Oh and sort your wiring out Wink

Plastics.....? Its no bike sunshine Very Happy
Yeah , but i have ample ventilation. I fitted a larger air-out fan to the back of the case, and have an air-in on the front and side.
the CPU fan has its own dedicated air-in vent.
Shit pick, but you get the idea
