In my youth, a VERY long time ago it was always merry Christmas.

Yet these days nobody says Merry anymore except my dad. Everybody said Happy..


Um why?

the 2 are rather interchangeable. unlike new year that is 'happy' only. 'merry new year' doesnt sound quite right Very Happy

I think it was when we started to get bombarded by Xmas ads etc in September, so by 24 December nobody could be arsed to be merry any longer, just happy it was almost over.
