Something without a fairing with be half the cost to insure and just as fast. GSXR's and the like will always be more expensive to insure, look at Hornets, Speed Fours, Fazers Etc.

Just get some quotes at websites like thebikeinsurer, put in all the details as though you have your licence and correct age ect ect and see what happens.

Thumbs Up

It's really the only way you can gauge how much your insurance will be.

Do you mean 25kW restricted or 25kW "restricted"?

I can't see the point in restricting a GSXR - that's like buying a really hot hooker then putting a bag over her head. You might as well chuck it up a bagged up fat chick, she'll look the same, cost less, and got the job done as well or better.

After passing my A2 test I asked my insurance company how much it would cost me to transfer my policy to a GSXR 600. I was expecting them to add a hundred or two to my £440 policy. They came back saying they couldn't insure me on it, and they could only find one insurer that could.. at 9 grand.

Comparatively I can insure a bandit next year, when me insurance is due, for between £350 and £450 depending on security and time I've owned the bike.

Best way is to run your own details through the comparison sites though, and see what they quote.

If he wants a 33bhp - let the man live. All good as long as he can afford it. I honestly couldn't care less if a Saxo decided to shoot off the line to prove his car is fast.

Can insure 04 GSXR for £675 TPO, I love the Northeast sometimes Very Happy

If insurance isn't too much and you can afford to buy and run the bike then knock yourself out, just restrict it or 'restrict' it Wink

Decide if a GSXR is for you though, try to find one to have a sit of and maybe a little whizz around the car park if somebody is nice enough.

i have a gsxr 750 srad which i rode at 18 when i passed my test, quoted 900 tpf&t. That was on confused/gocompare/a comparison site.

So keep looking around, as for these people saying getting smoked by a 125/saxo/etc, you'll only get done as much as you would on any other bike provided its 33bhp, so what does it matter? Smile

Buy an older bike, do a bit of learning first.
Jumping onto a shiney new GSXR6 as a first bike at 17 is a bit mental.
It's way too powerful to learn how to ride on.
You'll just pussy foot around corners, then hack it on the straights.

Get yourself something a little less powerful, which requires you to ride the bike properly, to get a fast ride out of it.

I started out on an NC29 CBR400, and it was probably the best thing I ever did.
Most of my pals had 600s, but I could keep up / out ride them, simply down to the fact that I could ride properly, as I had a bike I wasnt scared of, unlike them on the bigger bikes.

Oh, the 400s are DIRT cheap to insure too.

As others have said, do you really have your heart set on a GSXR?

I've just bought myself an FZR600R at 18 years old which (although it isn't insured yet) is bringing back quotes only a tiny bit more than I got for a Hornet 600. Don't know what it is about FZRs but they seem to be a lot cheaper than any other sports bike I've had a quote for. Even things like a ZZR400 were bringing back quotes of over £1000 where this FZR is under £700

I would imagine a GSXR would be far far more because of how popular it is, so no doubt crashed a lot more, but I never had a quote for one.

When getting quotes, use www.thebikeinsurer.co.uk, it only takes about 5 minutes to do and you get quotes from about 30 insurers. Although I think your best bet will be with CIA insurance, they specialise in "high risk" riders. So us young 'uns.

Have you considered an SV650?

I had a CG125 for 1 year to get used to riding, did my test and bumped up to the SV, the power is easily manageable and although it seems a big step in weight and speed at first it really doesn't take long to get used to, it's a fun but sensible amount of speed.
Adding to that, with the V-twin the restriction doesn't take away all the power, because the low down torque of the twin is still there even with the restriction.
i know a couple of friends currently with or had restricted 4 cylinder bikes and they don't run amazingly, it's the only time my SV will, and does do gixxers at the lights, when they're restricted. I rode a mates SRAD 750, and there's hardly any power above about 1/4 throttle or over 7k rpm, and it's above this that big 4's make most of the power, unlike twins which make the power low down.
So as well as high insurance costs for a high performance bike, you'd be losing power compared to cheaper (in every way - purchase, insurance, maintenance and parts possibly) bikes like the SV which can out-do you until 2 years down the line when you can de-restrict it (and it wouldn't take you long to get bored).
Look a little lower, I highly recommend the SV; mine has a full rev range, and runs beautifully on all levels, only difference to normal is it puts out 33bhp.
HTH somewhat, i haven't regretted my decision!

Having been through this I can tell you that unless you are willing to pay £2000+ to insure it TPO then it won't happen.

Also, as has been said, I have ridden restricted 600 supersports and they are horrendous. Absolutely zero pull and that's because they produce all their horsepower at the top of the rev range which you can't really get to and the same with torque, they have so little low-down grunt which means you have to rev the tits off it to get anywhere, the IL4 supersport engine just does not lend itself well to restriction.

You would be much better off buying a newer shape ('04+ IIRC) SV650S if you like that look of bike, they take restriction much better due to being a twin and will top out at the same speed, around a real 100mph when restricted to 33bhp, expect 0-60mph in around 6-8 seconds from anything restricted to 33bhp.

Anyway, TL;DR, don't bother with a supersports, you'll pay massive insurance premiums for something that basically doesn't work due to the restriction and you will look a right tool being out-dragged by chavs in their Corsas/Saxos and people on 250s.

Find a cheaper bike, like an SV650S/Bandit/GS500/Versys or anything like that and you will have a happier restriction period.

My restriction ended in October 2011 and it was great, two years isn't long mate, it'll be over before you know it! Thumbs Up!
