PostPosted: 23:32 - 27 Dec 2011    Post subject: Newsgroups - i don't get it Reply with quote

I thought i'd try newgroups out to download files, having never used them before.

So i've signed up for a free trial on a decent server (Newshosting), logged in successfully via Grabit, obtained a list of groups and subscribed to one etc, but i'm struggling to work out how to download a "full" file, rather than simply a few parts of one (i literally can't find a "recent" file that's complete - i'm assuming the search function only lists a certain number of items found and so i can't find every single part - nor a "get all parts" button). Edit: Apart from ~20MB RAR files that seem to exclusively contain a virus-ridden .exe file (?)

I'm aware that NZB files might be a solution, but i don't want to pay (as it seems you almost have to), just to get hold of them. And it does strike me as odd that the search function isn't any good for large files. Which means i'm probably not doing it right Sad

Help!

binsearch.info

Type what you want into search box

Sort the wheat from the chaff (passworded/fake/trojans etc)

Tick which collection/files you want

Click on Create nzb and load it into Grabit

If unsure whether an encode is a bag of shit, just download .part01 and 2 (or .rar .r00) and unrar and check "keep broken file"

Play the broken avi in VLC ignoring any warnings. If the first couple of minutes are not in Wiganese and are good, then get the rest.

Help!

https://www.nzbclub.com/search.aspx?

OK, had a search, something i wanted came up, downloaded and ran the NZB with Grabit....

"Article not found".
The file i chose was only 271 days old, and i have 1229 days retention on my news server?

Not getting it, unless its because i'm not signed up to the server that that particular file is hosted on - which would make sense. But then the question is, how would i search for NZBs located ONLY on "my" newsgroup server, with this?

I take it that's down at the moment?
(i hope it is, because if not, something's afoot Sad )

Edit:
Crap, the website pings OK, it's clearly my end.
Gah, no issues with the computer until i started fiddling with Newsgroups... I'll just restart and hope it fixes itself Very Happy

Maybe their retention is spotty or the propagation for that file was crap. Their oldest file might be 1200+ days. But 100% completes might not be.

You even get "article not found" on giganews occasionally. That's why we have pars.

Tried a few now (on nbzindex), still getting "Article not found" for every single part though...

Sorting by size order, i'm going for files that "look" right (i.e. the right size etc), so this is odd.

Anyone got something smallish in size (i.e. under a gig, as i'm on a download cap) and legal (don't want to get anyone into trouble after all Very Happy) that they know works that i can try to download to "test" that there isn't a problem with my setup / client / newgroup server?

Edit: Scratch that, i *think* i've found one that actually works. Will see if the file works soon! My line is maxed out straight away. Impressive.

As an aside, anyone got any recommendations for NBZ file sites that are largely devoid of crap and dead NBZs?

https://nzbs.org/
https://www.nzbsrus.com/
www.newzbin.com/ <- the best one there is, but it's not free
the downloader i use is SABnzbd+
I use giganews as the provider.
It's maxed out every connection i've ever used it on including academic networks which usually block torrenting.

forget free newsgroup services, you need to subscribe and pay a monthly fee.

UseNext
Astraweb
Giganews

Those are the main ones, it'll cost you about £5-£8 per month and they are very fast, easily max out your net connection.

It has been years since I used newsgroups but when I did they use them they pi$$ed all over torrents.

Set up I had:

Service Provider: https://www.newsdemon.com/

Software: https://www.newsleecher.com/?id=home

NZG Search: www.newzbin.com/

The thing is with newsgroups is either you do it full on or not at all. Full on option is you pay the money to get a very good system going.
I was on for about 3 years until the FBI started sniffing around. In that time I had full download speed on everything I downloaded and not once got a file with a virus or malware in it.

Newzbin has now been banned by many ISP's (including mine) so you will need to use a VPN service to get round the blocking (but has other benefits Wink )

I would only go down the pay route if you intend to download A LOT of stuff (like 100GB+ a month). There are ways of making your money back though, but obviously that would involve being a bit naughty Wink

Got it working just fine now via Astraweb and Newszbin. Didn't really want to spend the tenner, but it's the only way i could find enough of the 'articles' i was after. Scrapped Newshosting because i was getting a lot more 'articles not found'.

Still finding a fair amount of articles not found even now etc - but QuickPar seems to sort a vast deal of those out, and it's miles better than before i paid Newzbin their couple of quid.

Cheers for the help guys, its not the most intuitive/price-efficient of systems but i can definitely see the upsides.

Some of the article not founds will be due to DMCA take down notices being issued to newsgroup providers.

Newzbin isn't anywhere near as good as it was back in the day when it was the original team and not Newzbin 2. NZBMatrix what I use now after being a loyal Newzbin customer for 8 years.

This, and they aren't hanging about either, sometimes if I'm dl a game thats been out 2 days it will already be missing on giganews servers, then I have to resort to the equivalent of going bareback on a £25 alley hooker by using torrents.

Like this? https://bendstoke.com/browse.php?u=Oi8vbmV3emJpbi5jb20%3D&b=5&f=norefer Cool

While not free, Newzbin is very cheap for what you get - well worth it in my book.
