Stripping an engine and want to get rid of all the crap on the outside, what's the best way of getting all the muck/oil/grime off?

I've read diesel I think, what's difference between that and using petrol to clean it? Anything home made that won't damage the casing?

Cheers.

If the engine is out paraffin and a brush will do it easy and safe enough, if it's still on the bike then use something like Gunk or Jizer so you can wash it away afterwards, paraffin, diesel etc is hard to get rid of if you've dripped it all over the ground.

As my neighbour found out, after her son used a gallon of petrol to clean the engine on his old car. It lifted her nice new tarmac drive a treat. (he wasn't very bright at the best of times).

Nice one fellas. Think I'll pop Halfords & get some Gunk engine degreaser. Seems to have good reviews.

The Meguirs super degreaser has some very good reviews and costs about the same as Gunk in the tin, roughly £24 for 4l. I brought some Swafega oil and grease, 2l for £6.29 and that seems to work ok. Best value for money has to be the Gunk Ultra degreaser I brought today, 5l for £10.

Cheers, Lidl's closer than Halfords, so I'll check there first.

They usually have a display stand with the degreaser and the chain cleaner, both in similar tall cans, with brightly coloured lids
If they're on display it'll be difficult to miss them Thumbs Up

Cheers Daz, I guess the degreaser will be good to use on the chain aswell? Not even checked the chain yet, might need replacing anyways.

Need to pop the casing in the oven & get them bearings out yet.

Machine Mart sell parts wash fluid 5 litres for £5.99 p/n 0599-30412.

Maccess, who are normally trade price sell Jizer and Gunk at about £20 +vat for 5 litres, which makes the MM price far better.
