PostPosted: 17:14 - 27 Dec 2011    Post subject: Won a scooter, which one to choose? Reply with quote

So, I'm a right lucky sod and have won a competition for the scooter of my choice up to £2000. T&C's state it must be new scooter, max £2k RRP and will be sourced by the MCIA (so I don't think I can take advantage of any deals at a specific shop).

There's not a load on the market at this price but I think these look OK ...

https://www.uk.piaggio.com/en_UK/prodotti/NEW_TYPHOON/Typhoon_125/
https://www.uk.piaggio.com/en_UK/prodotti/FLY/Fly_125/
https://www.yamaha-motor.eu/uk/products/scooters/125cc/vity.aspx

Am I missing anything from the above list? Should I be tempted by any of the offerings from the likes of Sym or Lexmoto - some people say their bikes are a no-no but what about the scoots?

Also, I'm likely going to want to sell it pretty soonish as am planning to do my DAS soon and have a bike already, what kind of depreciation will I be looking at on a pretty much brand new scooter?

Any suggestions / advice appreciated!

Pick whichever has the highest resale value.
Then sell it instantly and get a real bike.

Nice one on the win, BTW.

read the t&c of the competition. A lot of them have a clause that you can't sell it within a year

Post the entire T&C's, no redactions, no "basically", and we might be able to save your manhood.

The Yam Vity looks pretty good value, given a choice I'd go with that

If I had two grand to spend on a new scooter I'd be buying a Honda Vision 110 for £1800. Tough as old boots, does 140mpg and will hold it's value as well as anything else in that sector if you look after it.

I quite like the look of the Benelli Velvet - https://www.benelli.co.uk/_bikes/velvet_125/velvet_125.php

There are loads of scooters out there for just under £2000 - just take a look at this dealers website to see what I mean - https://www.lynxscooters.com/

Now - if you intend to keep the bike long-term then choose the one which suits you but if you intend to sell at the earliest convenience then the resale value is what matters most and perhaps an hour searching on Ebay would help you choose....

I ride a Yamaha Vity and would certainly recommend them. Very minimalist so the money doesn't go on pointless chrome & styling junk, proper front forks unlike the bizarre set-up on the Vespa type scoots. Does a realistic 100mpg on a London commute, probably a lot better just poodling around, tyres appear to last forever. I can't imagine you'd have any trouble flogging it straight on if you so wish.

Cheers guys, not even considered the Honda and wasn't aware of Benelli either.

The Yamaha Vity is looking good at the moment, already have a YBR so will look quite nice beside it if I have to keep it for a while, also I guess it'll hold the price well.

You taken a look at the Honda Lead? Not too sure if they go for under £2000 new, but they're good little things, my mate has one that seems to of lasted forever. Smile

Wow. Lucky, lucky b*stard!! I'd choose the Typhoon just because it looks cool but the Fly is the more practical one.

It's not costing you a penny so just go for the one you really want.

I think the Vision may be the Lead re-named? Can't seem to find a new one on their site.

Too right, by far the best thing I have ever won! Typhoon does have the best looks, plus it is bang on the £2k limit, definitely in the running.

Personally I reckon the Vity looks more streamlined with more thought having gone into the styling. To me the Typhoon looks like a two wheeled old ladys mobility scooter from the side. But then I am biased.

Honda Vision 110

AFAIK the Lead is discontinued in the UK.

Beware of Benelli BTW - like Lambretta the only thing that's Italian is the badge. Those won't be worth a carrot once 12 months old, you'll be lucky to even get spare parts for them.

Personally i'd avoid Piaggio... Not because I think they're shite or anything. I'd just rather go for something Jap (Yamy/Honda/Suzy) as they are more reputable for reliability and cheap as chips to get parts for.

Not heard of any issues with Piaggio to be honest. Provided you're not trying to get parts in August you should be ok. I would have also thought their scooter back up is better than Aprilia's (Who are part of Piaggio group, and have been for sometime) superbike back up was.

Friend of mine had troubles with his NRG 50. Had trouble with getting the parts he needed (Water pump if I remember correctly).
That may have been down to parts distributor troubles rather than problems with Piaggio themselves, it's just tainted the thought of getting one over a Jap equivalent.
