Infact topboxes can be had for £20 in some places, my local bike shop has them. They take them off bikes they've bought if they look a tad rough.

i want to make some panniers for my bike ( love enduro bike but im along way from a 1000cc+ tourer  )
so i thought, of panniers for my 125 but there like £100's, then i thought....
aluminium DJ record boxes...
hardwearing, lockable and cheaper (£30 on ebay)
so when the weather gets better, im going to give it a shot.. |

I don't blame you for wanting to make your own... in 9 out of 10 cases, the rack is more expensive than the box ( ) Stupid, but what're you going to do. I'd personally have a look on eBay, just to see if you can pick up a bargain at all, if not, then look at making your own.

the cheapest rack for a cbr125 was £70  i have a couple of ideas to fix something like a ammo box however.
Im wondering about getting a couple of panniers too, but i dont fancy all the extra weight just yet. |

You ever thought of having soft luggage sets? Tank or tail bag and some soft panniers? They're cheaper, a lot of them are fully waterproof and they're pretty good quality.
I sound like a bloody soft-luggage salesman

That looks like a totally awesome box and pretty much bang on the right size.
I presume you're planning on fixing it down by drilling holes through the bottom of it and putting some U-bolts through or similar?
If you do this, it is a good idea to fit an aluminium or steel plate in the bottom of the box and put your fittings through that to spread the load. Good old fashioned bathroom silicone round the holes stops any water coming in.

OK... I am trying to pull some inferences from the 'lady-logic' here
(sorry dear couldn't get your cornflakes, so got you wheetabix, becouse the shop didn't have any shampoo!)
What has getting your tests to do with buying a top box?
- do you NOT want to spend money on one, becouse you want to spend it on tests instead?
- do you not want to spend money on a top box, becouse if you pass, you dont intend to keep the bike?
if first; prioratise the tests. get it out the way.
if second, how have you 'got by' until now? if you dont intend keeping the bike, why not keep on getting by, until you change?
if first, cant you keep on getting by until after you have done tests, and THEN see what pennies you have for a top box?

If i end up getting it my plan is like you said. Drill holes and mount a plate to the bottom and then seal the holes. I would probably create a rack by copying a simular one i saw on the internet.

Wherever i searched i couldnt find any cheaper that £60, which seems a bit silly as i could probably make something like that with bits i already have.
Mike, i want a top box because i want to start using the bike more for going to college, so that i can start to get a bit more riding experience. the money side is just me being tight, i dont like spending money when i can get a better deal. 
Im going to a bike shop today and they sell all sort of luggage stuff, so il have a look there first before i start waisting any money.
EDIT: just to answer a few of mikes questions.
I do intend to keep the bike after i pass. Its fast enough for what i need to commute along, which is mostly 30mph roads and is good on fuel. I also would have to wait until my insurance runs out which is september, so its quite a while away before i can consider a new bike.
To your other question, im doing quite well without a box, but at the moment im not taking it to college. If i had a box it would make it much less hastle to take to college, which is why i want one. |

OK... sounds reasonable....
SO..... what do you intend to put in the box?
At a guess: I'm presuming while riding, you want to stick a sports-bag with a few books, pad pens.... possibly a lappy, in there. Then when you park up, remove your 'sachel' stuff hat & gloves in the box, to save lugging them about and bashing the hat on every door-frame or locker, when jostled in the corridoors....

Hard experience talking here; I survived Three years of College & uni, without the luxuary of a top box.....
People learned to give me space in the corridoors.... or they got smacked with a Shoei!
I dont like knap-sack on the back, while riding, though have done it; and a £3.99 large size cargo net, is GREAT for strapping a spare lid or a school-bag to the pillion seat.
Cheap 'Throw-overs' are also a wonderful invention; and modern ones, can even be left 'locked' onto the bike,. strapped under the seat, so you dont have to carry them around.
I have had a set of 'Cheap' Oxford 'First Time' throw-overs for about five years now; and they have proved great value, and stayed permenantly attached to the bike for long periods of time. Think I paid about £25 for them at a show; they retain now for about £45.
If you want something a bit more 'secure' than a sports-bag under cargo net, for a lappy, perhaps. Good to carry weight of a HD security chain in, too, keeps the weight low.
After years of bungies and belts, through my college days; when I got the VF1000, I decided for my week-end get-aways, to invest in a propper luggage set. Two Non-Fango 46l boxes, and a rack with panier hangers. All in, fifteen years ago, I think it was over £300; but gave me versatility; one box on the rack for commuting, two boxes on the sides and the rack to take camping gear for touring.
All of sudden carrying 'kit' became 'easy'.... too easy.
Ten years later, when I got the CB750, I went to do a couple of rallies, and 'thought' to swap the luggage rack over... but leaving it almost to the last minute; found it wasn't going to be a two bolt job... so had to 'wing it'... which was when I bought the Oxford First-Time throw-overs! And haven't bothered with the boxes since.
Mainly because of 'perversity'; and the fun & 'challenge' of reliving college days, trying to hang shit off the bike!
If you go for boxes this early on in your riding career, you will be missing out on all that 'fun' and improvisation
If you want a top-box to stow your hat & gloves when away from the bike; have to say, DONT SKIMP.
Your £70 rack is neat and effective. And on top of it you will want something like a 45l locking top-box.
We got Snowie one of e-bay, it was £45 delivered I think, with metal base plate. Pretty good quality for the money.
No top box is totally secure though, so got a cheap push-bike cable lock to go round the rack and through the box handle to add a 'bit' more security; and at least the box is DRY inside.
Before getting that for Snowie; had had a ponder about what might be done by improvisation; and looked round the cheap shops for samsonite like suitcases or plastic moulded tool-boxes, and the like.
But, after much searching, there was little that would actually do the same job, and less still any cheaper!
Racks; I was fortunate, in I had two come with the 'project' bikes, so we didn't have to faff about trying to scour a second hand one, look for new old stock, or trying to make a 'universal' fit.
This, IF you go down the DIY route, is the important bit; you dont want something that looks like it was made by a twelve-year-old in metalwork at School, or worse.....
 Are you at Uni or Cof FE? What are you studying?
When I was at Coffee and Uni, we had 'Electives Wednesday'..
When I was at Uni, though, I was studying Engineering, so we didn't get to choose metalwork or anything as an elective, as it was part of our core carriluclum. When I was at Coffee though; we did, and I did; and spent two terms on the 'Go-Kart' project; others made tool boxes, or lamp brackets and 'stuff'....
Do you have 'Electives Wednesday'? Could you elect to do Metalwork, next term?
If so; tools and resources at your disposal, you could make something 'to measure' from decent quality metal, properly welded, and probably powder coat it too. Think we had to pay £5 towards material costs, or something like that, but worth looking in to?
Outside Met-Fab lab; you are likely to struggle to make a 'tidy' job of a rack, or make sturdy enough mountings.... and it doesn't take MUCH improvisation with old dexion shelving section, and having to buy the odd U clamp or wotnot, for that £70 for an 'off the shelf' rack to start looking worth the money.
BUT: main thing is, what you want to actually carry on the bike, or leave secured to it.
