Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone knows a way to repair scratched plastics? I've been looking on the web and youtube, but only seem to find stuff about repairing full on cracks then painting.
The scratches are very deep, and they look almost like I could buff them out with very fine sand paper, although, wanted to check with someone who has a bit more experience first.

Any ideas?

FJ

Post some pictures. If they are very deep then the last thing you want to do is try sanding them out, you will end up weakening the rest of the panel. A better option is to fill the scratches by plastic welding and then sanding down.

I'll get some pictures up on the weekend (it's dark when I finish work!)
But they're not too deep, is there an option before filling/sanding/painting?

Also, can't seem to find the fairing stickers online anywhere. I was wondering if it's possible to have them made my a graphics firm, has anyone had an experience with this?

Thanks

You passed your test right?

If so you can just sell it on rather than put money into it...someone else will more than likely drop it anyway meaning you wasted £100 of plastic stuff and stickers.

You probably never saw my CBR no..?

It wall be very hard to get a matching finish, years ago T-cut could do the job, but modern painting techniques and pastics don't like it...

Sand and respray is best bet!!! but you will not get a good match...

could just paint the whole bike with this - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HYCOTE-MATT-BLACK-ACRYLIC-SPRAY-PAINT-400ml-/150622741490?pt=UK_Body_Shop_Supplies_Paint&hash=item2311d0a3f2

Yeah, I passed a few weeks back. And the CBR's already gone to a new home. The scratches are on my new bike, a zzr600.

I don't wanna put any cash into repairing the scratches, but was kinda hoping there would be a bikers secret or something to cover them up.

I'll get some pics up, you'll all laugh and tell me sort the twisted sub frame first! Laughing

Thanks, I don't think I'll go that far though, and the stickers are the one on the fairing it self, rather than the "kwak" logo.

I think Paddy is probably right though, and it's not worth doing anything.

I'll still gets a pic up on the weekend though.

I did hear somewhere that caravan window restorer works as it's the same plastic, I'll look into that too.

I just had a little look on a caravan forum. There were a few people saying that light scratches on plastic can normally be buffed out using brasso and a very clean cloth...interesting.

What colour is the panel, where it's scratched?
If the panel is black there is a solution, of sorts, that doesn't involve sanding or painting.
What you need is some cabinet makers hard wax, it comes in a variety of wood colours and black, one stick is about the size of a Mars Bar.
All you need to do is shave some small pieces off the wax stick with a Stanley knife. Roll the pieces between your finger and thumb until they become soft, (the heat from your hands will soften the wax, although don't expect it to go as soft as, say, plasticine).
Once the wax has softened, work some into the scratches, don't worry if you apply too much.
Once you've filled the scratches with the wax, you can scrape any excess off with your finger nails or a plastic scraper.
Once you're happy polish over the area with some wax polish, ie Turtle wax, this will remove any smears.

This is the stuff you need:-

Pft!

Leave them let your bike wear those scratches and dings with pride, it shows that it is used. Unlike the power rangers I see now and again who have immaculate bikes with bog all miles on them.

Brasso...the very abrasive metal polish? Good luck with that. They now produce a polish for plastics but it's for TVs and ipod screens etc.

My 2p...
Deep scratch (through lacquer and top coats) i buy a small pot of matching touch-up paint and apply a few thin layers then use T-Cut then a good polish. The original Auto-Glym is excellent and will last me at least 5 years. Quick zap of Mr Sheen is my main polish.

Light scratches i live with.

if there original kwak decals then you'll probably still get them direct from kwak themselves, i normally use cradleys as they do mail order and the prices are usually quite good

I know, but I thought if it was as easy as 'use xyz wax' and you wont notice the scratches as much, then I'd go for it.

If the scrathes are deep then sand down a little bit to key them and then fill them with fibreglass resin. When its hardend sand it down and paint.

Ive done a few of these as i buy rs 125's so quite a lot of the time they have been dropped

Depending on how deep ie if more than 1mm recommend using p38 filler as its easy to sand and get a better finish, apply base coat, then lacquer use p1000 sand paper (wet and dry) very lightly sand in a circular motion then use autoglym to buff up either elbow grease or a drill with a polisher on the end

if its less than 1/2 mm then id say get a drill with a polisher on the end lay the panel on a flat surface with support underneath and buff out

or like others have said about use stickers
