i ride a black yamaha ybr125 i wear a high vis jacket what does everyone think of wheel stripes

also i have seen some reflective ones in blue but the problem is i used to have a pair of heated gloves and it had this tiny blue light on it coming out of the sleeve and i got pulled over several times because apprently your not allowed to show a blue light so technically does that make high vis blue wheel stripes illegal

also any other ideas on making me visable would be helpfull

They are not my type of thing, are they like rimtape? Rimtape is pretty ghey. By the way how do you like this even more massive text, I feel it gets my point over more than it gets your point over...

End of the day, people will only see you if they actually see you, you could light yourself up like a Christmas tree, if someone doesn't see you, they don't see you. Really though I have no idea what you're on about though

I agree, get some handlebar muffs and put white LED strips on them.
See a few bikes with them, and they definitely stand out at night.

Swings and roundabouts with Rimtape. I like the stuff and have managed to use it on my bike without catching the dreaded ghey, although paddy does look rather fetching in his leathers...... hmmmmm.... Shocked

Sorry, drifted away there.

Where were we.

Big lettering wont make you more visible on the roads and it'll probably piss many people off here who would normally help out a young man become more road safe.

Rimtape wont make you any more visible to cars either as their headlights normally point forward and by the time the rimtape reflects off your wheels from their headlight the chances are its too late anyways. Therefore Rimtape is purely cosmetic.

Led strips, HID headlights etc will all help but as said above. You still will get those that will pull out in front of you and not see you. Your best weapon is hope. Ride along hoping they have seen you and be ready to react in case they havent.

The thing you're missing, is if they can't see you halfway down the road with lights on, why are they going to notice these? And when they do it will be when you and your bike are flying across the bonnet, you're better off riding defensively Thumbs Up

Does one apply Rim Tape around one's arse piece or wot?[/size]

Visibility means shit to other road users.
It is much more important as a rider to look for those folk who do not see you.

This is because your hi-vis is only hi in daylight, and the reflective stripes on it only work if a light is shining on them.

What happens is, if you hold the same road position all the time and there is traffic behind you your headlight can sort of merge into the vehicle behind and it can look like one set of oncoming car headlights instead of a car with a bike in front of it. I know this cos despite being a rider myself and thinking I always look out for bikes I nearly knocked a scooter rider off one night when I was in my car waiting to come out of a junction. Sad

The trick is to weave about on the road. Seriously. If you are approaching a junction in the dark and you can see there is someone waiting at it or approaching it, just weave from side to side a bit. Doesn't need to be much just a few inches either way, but it will break you up from whatever is behind and make you more visible. Thumbs Up

This is a top tip.. Thank you! Thumbs Up

I've been worried about this as, on the roads, I can't make my fonts bigger Sad

Apparently there is a specific scientific technique for doing this. Also, some motorcyclists (such as myself) do it automatically.

When I'm approaching a junction, I change my road positioning to be as far out as possible so that if the car driver does pull out, I've got somewhere to go. This small movement does tend to allow people to notice me.

Although to be fair I don't often ride at night these days.

To be fair depending on how quickly the guy pulls out you may be better closer to the nearside of the road in order to miss someone pulling out on you! Further to the right could place you further into his line and unable to avoid the length/front of his vehicle as he emerges presuming he's turning right.

Just assuming and anticipating that every car probably will pull out of a junction on you is often the best thing to do, I always regulate my speed near junctions in order to be able to react and brake within the required time so it really doesn't surprise me when a car does pull out I'm just poised and ready to deal with it.

Its worth checking for any vehicles approaching the junction too which may not stop.

Back to the OP's question, I don't see how rimtape will help this issue as its only visible from the side. If he says he rides with a daytime headlight (as I do) then there isn't a great deal else he can do other than adopt a more defensive riding style, I've never worn high viz myself so can't comment on the efficacy of that.

I'd suggest he works on his approach speed and positioning a bit to make it more obvious. I sometimes move slightly to the right when approaching junctions as this little sideways shuffle makes you more visible to a driver who may not have seen you.

If he's turning right and he's far enough away for you to go around the back of him, then you should be able to stop IMO.

True but its sometimes easier to avoid rather than stop I find.

I have seen people hurtle up towards junctions not stop as normally expected and simply pull out to the right at speed while using mobiles completely oblivious to oncoming traffic, really surprises you when you see it but it does occur.

In that situation where your braking space is cut right down keeping over to the left can give you enough leeway to avoid the car.

Converserly as you say with the vehicle turning left keeping slightly to the right would give you more leeway, but you can't always tell as some people think indicators are irrelevant and their positioning is so bad you simply can't tell...
