I've only been riding for around 9 months, with real miles done in the past 7 weeks. Today, riding down the A3 in the dark with torrential rain and brisk winds, I was on edge.

Being blinded by rain, so much so that i was sure the inside of my visor was wet, was not ideal. The wind trying to blow me into other cars was somewhat scary. Took a short break 2/3 of the way home, to check for internal visor rain, and generally have a calm down.

Any suggestions as to how to deal with such a ride? Does it get easier with time?

No!

Been in similar situations on a few occasions, try not to tense up.
Having said that sometimes it isn't worth the risk and your best pulling over like you did! Thumbs Up

Fucking hell, can fully sympathise.

Was on the A46 coming back from Nottingham to Leicester today, waited for the rain to stop, but there was still a fine drizzle but bloody hell the wind was intense. Especially when I was crossing the trent river and some very open parts of the A46. Was getting blown all over the place on my little 125!

Started reciting "loosey goosey loosey goosey" to remind myself not to tense up. Even made a song out of it Laughing

With a bike you just need to be prepared to not go or delay a journey sometimes.
Like it or not bad weather isn't just an inconvenience but a potential threat to survival.

I think it does get easier with time. Or maybe its just your confidence that improves - but I guess in the end it works out to be the same thing really Shocked Neutral

Been riding a while now and still get a bit iffy when the first rain comes after our lovely summers Laughing

Have been blown sideways before, like physically sideways, forced into the middle lane through win. Bike kinda drifted on the water. That is pretty scary Thumbs Up

Medway Bridge in heavy rain and wind no matter how often I do it, it always scares the shizzle out of me when getting blown across three lanes. I now try to use lorries as cover haha.

But like above try not to tense it can just make it so much worse.

You did exactly the right thing. If you don't feel safe then slow down and stop if you need to. If it gets really bad then look for a pub or restaurant where you can dry off and warm up, and if it's seriously bad out there then give up and call someone to come pick you up by car or even book into a motel for the night. Better to spend £50 on a bed for the night than crash your bike.

The A3 is harsh for wind! My first time on the A3 was down at horndean, wind didnt seem to bad so i thought id nip down the A3 to portsmouth, That was a mistake! Got blown all over the place and ended up tucked up alongside a Lorry at 50mph until the next exit!

Im dying to take my bike through the Tunnel at Hindhead ( as you do Wink ) but as yet im not sure i want to ride 40mile up the A3 knowing how windy it is down here at its most flat and sheltered!

Having said that, i am getting used to the wind a lot more now, i try to ride every day i possibly can, whatever the weather, figure its the only way to gain confidence.

I dont know why, but i find having earplugs in helps when its mega windy, cuts the noise out, helps me relax and loosen up. Worth a go eh!

Do you treat your visor at all? A good coating of Mr Sheen or whatever polish you might have lieing around makes a significant difference to how well the rain clears from your visor. And though it'll not guarentee clear vision in a torrential downpour, it'd certainly give you an edge. As will having gloves with a proper 'wiper' attached to a finger. Thumbs Up

Can't do much about the wind though, beyond not travelling when it's that windy. Even the biggest fattest bike will be hoofed around when it's that bad, and I find it best to just slow right down, be alert and grit your teeth. Sad

It does get easier. Keep the speed down, pull over and wait it out if you feel uncomfortable. An hour rest at rush hour can mean the difference between getting blown into traffic and getting blown into an empty lane. If it is VERY windy, dark and rainy I tend to hold off until the traffic has died down a bit, gives you a little more freedom to do your own thing and filtering in strong winds can be dodgy. Leave a big gap to the vehicle in front, gives you some leeway if you can't anticipate them stopping because of crap visibility, and don't want to risk locking the wheels in heavy braking on a cold wet road.

You can anticipate windy sections when overtaking large vehicles, passing clearings in the trees lining the roads, going over bridges, out of tunnels etc etc (harder when it is dark and rainy of course). Keep light on the bars and have active countersteering well engrained into your head so it is a natural response rather than attempting to shift your weight around to correct your road position. Grip with your knees, keep your arms and hands loose (easier said than done when you think you are being blown under a lorrry).

As for visibility, a clean scratch free visor with a rain treatment (mer do a rainaway product suitable for plastics, I use it, gets a Thumbs Up from me) helps a lot. Rain can come down the inside if your visor doesn't seal well up to your lid or if you have to keep it ajar to stop it misting. A pinlock insert will handle the misting allowing you shut your visor and stop water getting down the back.

A visor wiper on your glove is also very handy for finer road spray and rain drops that don't clear by the wind.

Crouching a little lower does seem to help a tad against sidewinds, this might be because of a better weight distribution and body position rather than a significantly reduced surface area thing though.

All in all, it is rather unpleasant, illicits that arse puckering sense of impending mortal danger, tests your ability to keep your cool, tests your bike control and sprays cold brine down your collar but it does get easier, makes your balls grow, your chest hairy and can get the adrenaline going. Take it easy Thumbs Up .

I also find gripping the tank with your knees/thighs helps both keep things stable and keep your top half relaxed.

It osnt get niceer but much easier. Worst journy I had was 70 miles on me'125 with a poor headlamp, dark unknown country roads. Soaked wet gloves on the inside, and cold.

But people at work think Im crazy. Me'600 is broken so I cycled in for 2 days. 48 miles done, it was warm, I was dry an the weather was not too cold, nor hot enough to make me sweat. Then I injured my knee an now Im bussing Sad
