I have 23447 songs (132gb). The problem is that i have way too many duplicates, when i select display duplicates in itunes library there are 3588 songs (20.27gb). I would like to be able to fit all my collection onto my 120gb classic ipod.

After searching online the only methods i can find is by individually deleting each song.

some people will argue that some duplicates are necessary if you have the same song from an artist album, compilation, soundtrack etc.

All i want is 1 copy of each song, as i normally play music on shuffle.

Can anyone tell me if there is an easy way to delete duplicate songs.

when all the duplicate songs are shown, click EDIT > SELECT ALL and then right click the mouse and select DELETE SELECTED SONGS.

i understand this method, but its going to delete the original song and the duplicate?

example.. I have 2 songs called aerodynamic by daft punk in my library, when i select display duplicates it displays both of them (the original file and the duplicate). if i was going to delete everything highlighted as a duplicate, i would lose both?

i also want to delete the files not just remove from itunes library.

cheers

I have nothing helpful to add. Sorry. I just wanted to say that itunes is a hateful, ill designed, disappointing bag of wank.

In fact. I'm going to print a screen shot of itunes wipe my arse with it and post the shit stained print out, here, to remind everyone how shit it is.

i looked at this the other day, but since no one has come up with a solution for you, here is mine.
deleting duplicate songs itunes is not possible en mass just in case you delete something by accident.

if you are on a windows pc then......
download mediamonkey. it is quite similar to itunes and is compatible with your ipod.
what you can do is create a playlist with all your music, then click edit > remove duplicates, then press the sync button. it will do what you want except for deleting from you computer
